Was broke down on the side of the road . Had blown a turbo that morning. First time I had to deal with a run away engine. She had started to run on the oil . Was hearing bits and pieces , but on a morning show, so was thinking it was a show prank!

I was making a delivery in Philly on 9/11. I was at my 3rd of 6 stops, and when I walked in, no one was to be found. I didn't know yet that it happened. I found everyone huddled around a radio, so asked what was going on. Everyone shushed me, so I listened. It was the Howard Stern show, and when I heard him doing the play-by-play of the events (the second plane hadn't hit yet) I immediately thought he was kidding and spoofing Orson Wells' "War of the Worlds" from 1938. It was Stern after all, and he can be pretty classless.
I had to call my mom in AZ to find out if it was true. After that, I couldn't wait to get out of Philly and get home, as no one knew (other than that it was a terror attack) what was going to happen next. The rest of the day was surreal as no one smiled. Most just carried blank stares. I kicked off the rest of the stops and high tailed it up the PA Turnpike for home. Outside of Philly, most of our business was in NYC, so we didn't work much the rest of the week.firemedic2816 Thanks this. -

Was driving in my pickup on my way to work and listening to the Howard Stern Show. Remember the little Indian run gas station that was directly in front of my employer immediately jacked his price up to $5 a gallon, was probably close to a $1.50 or less back then, and there was a line around the block with cops directing traffic
