The fluorescent orange are most definitely more visible, however; some states stil require red only.
Also consider that some states allow overnight runs on certain size loads and red cannot be well seen at night. -
Oh boy. I went through every state regarding flags, lights and strobes.
I agree as stated, the PERMIT will state which color flags to use. If not, have the permit company send you the information. I don't think I would try to roll through a CA/Idaho weigh station with what they don't want. Same with flashing lights on load. They want a specific color.
Now, you can accessorize after you comply with what they want in order to make the load move visible and I am totally on board with that, but, when folks are texting, or playing Pokemon, and drive off a cliff, that tells you they are really not going to see you either. Lol
Brighten it up so at least if something happens and it's not your fault, they can't say they couldn't see you.
Take pictures of your flags/ load as well.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
@UltraZero is correct, go by what the permit says. I've had permits state "Red or Orange".
Myself, all I own are orange flags for last 15+ yrs. They hold their color better in bad weather.
Countless inspections... Little loads, super loads, night moves... even a couple of MA and AR State Troppers yellin at me like a junk yard dog.
No ones ever questioned the color of my flags.
Just my 2cents. -
Wow. Highcountry. My first CA Load was a disaster. I pulled an 11'8" wide from Irvine. Left at 2:30 - 3:00pm and didn't put any lights on the load. Well, I was going up 15 and didn't get there til after dark. Guess what. I got pulled in and read the riot act. I told the DOT officer that I Needed to come in to put my lights on because It was dark and there was no place to pull over/shut down. I got a ticket for not having lights even though I had the right color and that they were flashing. Of course you know, that ment a ticket. Luck, no monitary/CSA Points were issued since I had the lights in hand when I got out of the truck. They had to be amber and flashing and not red.

Oh heck yeah. Night moves, a different story.
DOT and CHP, have no mercy what so ever, gotta be right color front and rear.
I was just talking daytime moves.
good to hear no CSA points, money comes and goes but points stay around for awhile. those hurt. -
Yeah.. I was lucky. I got out the truck screaming the DOT office that I was in traffic for 4 hours with no place to pull over or stop. Bumper to bumper traffic. He told me I should have pulled over on the shoulder. I told him there wasn't any shoulder. Then he told me I should have pulled over on an off ramp. Yeah. 11+ feet wide??? good luck with that. I think he wanted to give me a ticket for not doing a 50 mile DOT stop. But, I was only 40 miles from where I started. What a pain in the you know where. Yeah. I was happy to get out of there. The rest of the states were pretty much o.k. I changed flags as per each state I went through.

The smart thing to of done was to have put them on before you left with the load!nate980 and johndeere4020 Thank this.

First time, shame on me. 2nd time, shame on you IT could be 9:00am in the morning and I put lights on just because of that last stupid ticket. It won't happen again. Believe me. They might ask me why are my light on and I will feel happy to tell them why. Of course it won't get me points. Lol.
Ke6gwf Thanks this.
