I'm currently at less than 4 months here and have been almost everywhere except the northeast. Our dispatcher has told me he prefers to keep us out of there, although it can happen on occasion.
A passport can get you runs to Canada with extra border crossing pay, around $25 I think. Tarp pay is $25 for steel and $50 for lumber. $50 if you have to take a 34 on the road.
When I started I was told to expect to be out around 25 days/month. Seems like the way it has gone thus far. I have yet to request time off but have been routed through home regularly to enjoy a couple weekends per month.

One more quick note....for Canada you get the border crossing pay. $25 sounds right. But you also get an extra .05cpm for all Canada miles. So I usually like to go way up like Edmonton or somewhere because of the mileage bump. Instead of just going to Winnipeg.Peelsession Thanks this.

Good point. Add another .10 cpm for all oversize loads. On my first right now. 10 ft wide which isn't bad at all. Kind of different having to follow the routing on permits and pulling in to all scales even with prepass giving the green light. All going well thus far as most have been closed enroute to Penn.
The curfews are a pain and didn't allow me to get this delivered by Friday afternoon so have to sit on this load until Monday.
Catching up on college football today and breaking out the fishing pole tomorrow as I'm walking distance to the Potomac!

Thanks for the responses, folks. Been talking to Mike (is he an independent recruiter?) and should be heading up to orientation next week. Need to call tomorrow and make sure everything is good. I'm going to the flatbed side and was told 2 weeks training to learn the process. I had hoped I would never be in a "two dudes, one truck" scenario again, but guess it's one of those things you can't avoid. Anyone know if they run you like a team during training? Seems a lot of connoisseurs do...

Same here. Mike is helping out since the other recruiter is off on leave or something. Really nice folks. I'm just a bit concerned about the 2 year contract because I am a new driver and don't know what to expect.

Dont worry too much about that contract. 2 years here is better than 6 months at many other companies. And you'll make more money working for better people here than you will at those other companies too.FredZeppelin77 and Peelsession Thank this.

Hi sluglife. I can tell you how the training environment is in the flatbed division. I am the only flatbed trainer....so, I'm that guy. I do not run like a team. Especially the first few weeks. I can not train, and can not help you if I am asleep across the bunk behind you. Having said that, there are times I feel a newer guy needs to have a little time to drive alone. To not feel he is always being tested and inspected, so to speak. So I may read a book, in the passenger seat or occasionally in the bunk. Just to give the co-driver some time. But, as time goes on, I do try to stretch a little more miles per day out of the truck than I can do solo. That is mainly so I can feel the equipment is being better utilized for the company. And honestly, I do it too, so I can make a little more money. But we will not turn team miles by any stretch. The main point is to train and teach. On the flatbed side, much of the teaching is done standing next to the trailer talking about securement and tarping anyway.tscottme Thanks this.
