I've hauled butter too. Teach yourself to look at every situation like the grocery warehouse workers do; look at it from their perspective, then it's easy to outsmart them.
That grocery warehouse, can't remember the name, but not far from the foot of Black Mountain. is crooked. Receiver said, "If you want the bills signed, then take a case of butter from your next stop and leave it on one of our pallets." I said, sure no problem. So, I did some creative stacking and it looked like he had an extra case, when in fact, he was short a case, which I took home. He thought he really was smart and had pulled a fast one on me.

Grocery stores are worse than grocery warehouses. Those clowns ask for free samples from drivers; in other words, steal something off your own truck and give it to me. Turn the tables on them by saying something like, "OK, I'll do it and I want you to get a half gallon of butter pecan ice cream out of your cooler and sneak it on my trailer." This method leaves them unhappy, but what can they say?
Had one guy steal a case of hams off the truck while unloading at a grocery store. They were very expensive hams packed in wooden crates. What I did was steal it back along with an extra case. At my next stop the guy there saw there was an extra case of hams on his pallet, and told me, "The count is right." I said, "OK, sign the paperwork and I'll be on my way." He was really snickering thinking he stole a case of hams from me. I didn't really care, just made a game of watching the town misfits patting them selves on the back.

Should have a TV show of this stuff. Sounds hilarious. When I was 18 I got a holiday season job at UPS putting crap in the UPS trucks. I always saw people trying to slide a box under something so it gets "lost" and then try to sneak it out. I'd pick it up when they weren't looking and look at them as I threw it back on the line.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Some grocery stores try to make a quick profit just on paper work. One trick they use is to swap delivers stickers on the boxes. For example, a case of off brand soft drinks has a sticker of $3.00 and a case of hot chocolate has a sticker of $60.00 which is the prices the store pays. They will switch stickers and put the $60.00 sticker on the $3.00 case and have you write it up as a mispick which means the wrong case was shipped. This way they make a $57.00 profit just by switching stickers. I'd write it up backwards so it looked like I was returning a case of hot chocolate that was priced at $3.00 so what happened is it costs the store $57.00 instead of making a profit of $57.00, and the $60.00 sticker would vanish so no credit for that.
I really got fed up with dealing with those clowns; it is just too easy to outsmart them.

    Nope.

Case of butter damaged by tow motor when it slipped off pallet. Case by number and ID code reported to dispatch so they can file insurance claim. It needed to be back at home office in the freezer until sold. Either paid insurance check, or sent to whole sale.

The other choice if you do not show up with that butter is the value of the damage taken from your check. No butter, no money. They cover the loss either way. What is time worth to you? Driver. I gave the butter to the metal crew, they all considered it much more valuable than cash money. And got me loaded in less than a half hour. That was worth being able to get out NYC in the early afternoon because that load has to go overnight somewhere and you are already running late standing around waiting to load.

Keeping more product such as several hundred pounds of high value steak that is declared damaged (But not really) results in a federal or lower prosecution against you should you sell that to someone else on the street and did not turn that meat in. Many companies have OSD people who handle damage and loss claims and want that product recorded and preserved for resale to whole sale distributors.

I got all you guys beat! I worked for a food distribution company. We would deliver to bakeries, pizza joints and restaurants. Bagel joint would give breakfast, couple slices of pizza for lunch and gourmet hamburger for dinner!

One bakery I went shopping. The manager saw me and yelled at me "you're never buying anything here again!" Then he gave me a couple loaves of bread and some fancy cake. We never bought a thing there again, and he would get mad if I didn't jump the line to get the stuff!
