Pennsylvania is a baddddd place to be using a phone gps. Let alone depending on a gps at all. He's Gunna get a crash course for sure. Either he'll survive and thrive or we'll be seeing him on twisted truckers.bzinger Thanks this.

No atlas, no training with someone IN PA... 7 mountains will kill him if milesburg does not... Never mind some of the other hills and mountains with my name on it. Bethlehem will kill him for sure once he gets loaded and tries to leave there is a main road that ternimates in what is roughly a 12% a mile down to a T with traffic light red for him outbound and the river beyond besides. He might have already hot brakes before that final stop.
He will not last 3 months. What a waste. I call this neglect. Im happy you taught him how to use a Atlas. But sheesh, that tells me that those smart phones make really stupid users. I own a smart phone but it's only 30 dollars in value for messages plus storm tracking that's it. Literally. Everything else is in my head more or less what the Atlas says. I still buy them. -
I haven't opened my Atlas in a month but I wouldn't head out on a run without one. I know most of the roads but not all.
-
So you do not drive a car on the road either?cnsper Thanks this.
-
Indeed. I check the atlas where possible.
What I really liked is checking the google earth from home prior to a trip. Once I burn in a new building to memory from the virtual visit of standing there... it's like being already there before. The two go hand in hand. But Atlas is first. -
YEP, but like most truck drivers I spend a lot less time in my personal vehicle.

In other words your Dad was normal, down to earth.
Sounds like you are overwrought with guilt because you couldn't cram 4 weeks of cdl training into a 14 minute conversation.
I'd say you saw something in this man, that you also see in yourself.
Feel like you left a comrade in trouble?
You didn't.
Your right about these POS that work in offices that are well versed in e-mail & smart phones, and look at you like your stupid if you are not, even though they couldn't even couple the truck, let alone get it out of the parking lot.
You said your doppleganger had a good appearance & good bearing. Then he has hope, he made it that far, he's having a morning as well.
You did what you could. More than a lot of people would. Now that the mega's are trying so hard to shove e-logs down our throats, everyone will be even more pressed for time to help others, or do things safely.
As long as he doesn't crash, he'll be ok. -
I feel guilty because he seemed a decent man just trying to make it in a business that eats people up like popcorn and I didn't think smart enough. I didn't see much of myself in him, I just try and be decent to people. I'm more angry than anything, I just don't understand why anyone would hand him the keys.ramblingman, Lepton1, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this.

Why would PA kill him?It didn't kill me.7 mountains didn't kill me either and I drove there in winter with 3 weeks of "experience".Better yet I was learning shifting on PA hills with 45k load.Sure,it was stressful at times like when I had to back up.3 mile thru some small PA town in the mountains at 6.30 am.Looking back I guess I was a bit lucky too.
Dave_in_AZ, Toothpick1 and Chewy352 Thank this.
