If the crank is bad, the engine has to come out. I don't see any way to wiggle that crank out without pulling the engine from the truck.

I don't either. The mechanic that is going to do the work has a slim and I do mean slim hope that the bearing didn't score the crank. if that's the case, He thinks he can save it without pulling it. i'm interested to see if he can pull it off but don't hold out much hope for that out come. I'm already pricing cranks knowing that I will end up pulling the motor to replace it. What I meant by going though it was, While its out, pretty much everything that can be replaced will be replaced. redo the heads, oil pump, balancer, etc

Well, looks like that didn't work out. we tried to polish the crank ( #1 rod bearing was the problem ) while still in truck in an effort to try and get a bit more life out of it before rebuild. Replaced both main and rod bearings but that didn't work as planed. it still had a slight noise at high idle and as it turned out, turned the #1 bearing a second time trying to drive it over to a friends house to begin the tear down. The shop's mechanic that I normally use manged to tear up his shoulder pretty bad and that required surgery. what that meant to me was that he will not being doing much of anything until he heals up which could be as little as 6 weeks or as long as 6 months. Being hes the only mechanic there and I kinda need the truck back before then, I ended up with it at a friends house who is helping ( doing most to the work it seems ) me replace the crank and rebuild her. ordering crank this morning out of KY. Do to limited finances, I decided on going with a recommended aftermarket rebuild kit rather than OEM cummins. we'll see how that works out in the long run.

Motor is out..now the fun starts IMG_3403.JPG

Good luck, it seems that stuff never happens at the right time financially.
