Hi, I know UPS has their own section but I posted there and didn't get a response so I thought I would post here. My question is I have a Class A license and an opportunity to start at UPS Freight part time on the dock. The person who interviewed me said I could probably drive for them occasionally after I get the endorsements needed but I wanted to ask on here to see if anyone could let me know if this is a good opportunity or if I would be part time forever.

I ain't never worked for UPS but I know a couple of guys who do and it took em 5 yrs working part time to land a driving gig. They explained that there is a waiting list and you gonna do your time.
With that said I'm sure somebody else will chime in. It may be different from terminal to terminal

Being a dockworker and being a driver are two completely different divisions. Dockworkers get paid about a buck less than drivers. Part Time Dockworkers I think work about 6 hours or less a day. When you applied online, it should of explained what shift you'll be working. It's a good opportunity to move up to P&D or Line haul if you can stick it out. It seems that you'll be working as a Combo driver where you'll work on the docks or do a couple P&D runs if needed. Dockworkers I think roughly start off around $16.50 an hour or so. Whenever you switch over to P&D, you'll get paid a buck more. Dockworkers top out around $28 an hour after 4 years, but the question is can you survive at part time hours at the starting pay rate. I'm not sure if you even get benefits or a pension, but if you can stick it out, you'll definitely reap the rewards when you reach top rate.

    Good luck.

OK, I'm assuming you're looking at UPS Freight, which was Overnite Transportation before Big Brown bought them out. I think Slick Willie thought you applied at UPS Parcel, which does have waiting lists for everything. But UPS Freight, which is UPS's LTL division is like any other LTL company (think YRC, OD, ABF).
That being said, I believe you stand a good chance of being hired. However you'll still have to put your time in to become full time, but I would imagine that would be measured in months, not years. It is well worth the wait, as LTL jobs are the ones you retire from, hence the low turnover most LTL carriers have. With that in mind there are lots and lots of guys in my age group (I'm 67) who will be retiring in the not too distant future, creating a lot of job openings. So, yeah, I'd go for it. Good luck to you!

UPS is a physically demanding job so keep that in mind.I think like FedEx all their dock workers are part-time because after 5 hrs you'll be wanting to go home.I've seen how they work.Driving is also demanding but the pay is there and many or most retire from UPS.If you don't mind hard work I say go for it.If you show up every day and ontime you'll become fulltime.

I too am seeing replies that would apply to UPS, the parcel service with the all brown trucks, driver is asking about UPS Freight, not the parcel service As far as I know the fleets are totally separate, as are the contacts covering wages. I have been seeing ads locally for TT drivers, from UPS parcel service. Most likely for coverage during the holiday season. Not sure, but probably temp positions. Still might get you in the door, if you fit their profile.

I appreciate the reply. I am looking at freight not the parcel side.
