i think it really depends on the terminal as far as if you're going to stay part time after you get your endorsements. Right now, you can't be hired as a driver because you DON'T have all the required endorsements. i really doubt you would only drive "occasionally" after you meet the requirements UNLESS you stay classified as a dock worker.
i think it is a good opportunity. No job is perfect, but this is one of the best gigs i've had. See my thread entitled, "UPS freight diary." Some drivers are making 100K and over and some make 100K and only work 4 days. (Not me though.......)
Any other questions, feel free to ask.

I appreciate the reply. I just hope it doesn't take too long to get the hazmat endorsement. I've been told it can take as long as 2 months.

That may depend on which state your in. But i think once you pass the test you're giving a conditional endorsement----which is good enough to get the endorsement put on your license---which for all practical purposes is good enough for the company. Then, maybe 2 months later you get the official letter from the Federal Gov't saying your golden. That's what happened in my case.
Here's another thing. Some of the questions on the test are not in the book. So study it left, right, upside down and sideways. The last time i took the test it was easy, but the time before that i just barely passed.jlawson1979 Thanks this. -
Thanks, I live in Tennessee and I know the online practice tests can be tricky. Hopefully I can get it on the first attempt.

I'm not sure where you are in Tennessee.......but here in Nashville every large LTL firm is hiring and if you have at least a year of driving experience and can maneuver a 53 foot trailer in a whole host of tight roads (Nashville is awful in some sections and has terminated the careers of many an average driver) and are an above average backer, I think you would be better off applying for a driving position (South Eastern, Estes, Old Domin, Etc) The curve to $25 an hour is very short if your reliable and skilled........and everyone tries to compete with UPS bennies. Down side....... long hard physical work, but if your in shape you will have no issue. At 52, I left LTL as I was always injuring myself and wanted preserve my self for retirement as my wife is 15 years younger then myself and will be able to retire early. I made very good money, but 12 hours a day tugging freight was the norm.

I live in Cleveland near Chattanooga. I am keeping my options open because I don't want to get into something I regret. Thanks for the reply.
