Tips and Tricks of flatbedding

I really like the way this guy has his headache rack set up. 4" aluminum square tubes stood on end. Fold the chain in half and drop into the tube. Hook the hooks on the edge. Nice and tidy

 

But they probably get more miles than you.

 

I'm fine running 1000 miles at $4/mi when they're running 2500 and not even meeting me at gross, let alone net.

 

I've been trying to explain this to guys for 20 years. Some just won't ever get it. They can't get out of the company driver more miles is more money mentality.

 

Anyone recognize these?

I needed a quick fix that would allow me to run at night in Wyoming and Montana but the magnetic ones that I have will not stick to concrete.

So I got these from harbor freight and covered the lenses with lenses repair tape to get the correct color. Took two different tapes because the rolls came out pink and white. Had to get the flat sheet stuff that was darker.

Fingernail polish and paint both work but this looks cleaner.

 

I've come to recognize this mentality in people I'm talking shop with pretty quickly, and if it's not the first time they've heard more miles =/= more money, I'm not going to waste both our time trying to drill it into their head again. Thankfully it's mostly only older drivers with the common courtesy to come over and ask if I need a hand with a tarp or a wrench then digress into telling lies, and if they've been around this long they've usually got the easy way of making money figured out. I haven't even approached "the counter of wisdom" in the last three years because there's a point where it stops being funny and is just sad.

The counter of wisdom is awesome for laughs. It's been about a year since i sat down there. The last time was hysterical. It was this guy talking about how florida had gotten anti farmer and he starts spouting off about such and such farm wasnt allowed to grow crop a b and c for the last 3 years. Ironically the big farm he was speaking about is about 7 miles from my little 40 acre hobby farm, i drive by it almost daily and I've known that farmer going on 20 years. Funny thing, for not being allowed to grow cucumbers by the state anymore he certainly seems to have a few hundred acres of them right in view of the road and every season my wife makes me stop by for a big ### crate of them.

Ratchet winch bars are worthless! Normally you don't have enough room to get more then 2 clicks on them. Keep your ratchet binders oiled and closed between uses. The more you can keep your equipment out of the weather the longer they will last. Do not keep your straps rolled up on winches (see last comment). Use a smoke tarp, or old tarp cut down, to cover your tarps in the winter if you must keep them on the bed of the trailer, Will help keep water and snow off of them. When using chains, run your chain around the pocket and hook it back into the chain so you can adjust a 1/2 link when needed for snap binders. When unlatching a snap binder, make sure to keep your head to one side or the other, not in direct line with the binder (don't ask me how I know this) Do not, I repeat DO NOT jump off our your trailer!!! Trust me when I say, you will regret it when you get older.
