He hates the rates of trucking. Wait till he goes broke working for uber and lyft. He'll be back in a week.

I'm signed up with both of them. But i don't see any money to be made with either of them anymore since they lowered their rates almost in half. Got a few friends that gave it a whirl and they're back to company slaves.

If you take knock out all your bills and take the IRS out of the equation then maybe you can afford lunch once a week.

On a side note, If you get in an accident and your passengar ends up in a life or death situation. Or just flat out gets hurt for whatever reason or whatever. Will your standard insurance take care of them????? Cuz that very instance was in the news not too long ago and the uber driver is being sued.

Insurance for the passengar isn't a requirement for uber and lyft. And chances are, your full coverage requirement may not do anything for them. Being as how it doesn't cover your full time job as a 1099. Nor take the place of any occupation insurance as required of companies.

But if you're heck bent on taking that venture. Get yourself a specialty type vehicle. Rates are better then standard cars.

Here's a video of why uber is a scam. And this video was made when the rates were higher.

Wow, why just not do some local work with your truck or be home every other day? Uber and Lyft will bring you to a poor house. I also did Uber when it was fresh and hot, was pulling it about $300 per day after fuel, but it quickly died out, complete stupid scam

I had the same idea you did. Lotsa folks do. I'm just letting you know my conclusion. I'm still trucking.
Around these parts. Uber has a very high turnover rate. It's an american dream. That doesn't exist.

If the rates get back to what they were before they got lowered. Then there's a chance. A guy could make something at $1.20 a mile. Which was the going rate when i signed up. Pretty tough to do at $.80 a mile. The current rate now. And when you factor in the 20% uber and lyft take before you get paid. That only leaves you with $.64 a mile.

Uber also don't allow tips. Has to be cash under the table. Lyft allows tips.

The best time to make money is also during the hot times. People going and leaving work. But, you've got all the traffic to contend with. So that'll slow you down with hauling lots of passengars.

Hauling drunks is another hot time. But eventually you'll get tired of working friday and saturday nights. And, you'll have to worry about other drunks smashing in to you while you're hauling drunks home yourself. There's that insurance factor kicking in.

You could always try setting up as a pilot car.

Friends of mine, husband and wife, both do Uber and really like it. They avoid the bar scene late at night so usually go home around 10pm or 11pm.
She's disabled and he was laid off from a good job. He found some flunky job minimum wage, so he runs Uber after work and she runs it during the daytime. They get by ok.

Hey bzinger, that's great. I did the same thing in my mid-50's, ( after 35 years trucking) and don't regret it one bit. While I'm not sure if the Uber thing would be for me, one thing was painfully clear, trucking wasn't what it used to be, and while I still enjoy the actual operating the truck, it's just not the same job. I did a short gig ( 5 weeks) shuttling trailers around a cranberry marsh, never got 'er out of low range, and that was ok, I guess, but boring. Tell you what, whenever the 1st snow hits (and it's not far off) now, I don't miss plodding along at 25 mph one bit. Best of luck. Keep in touch, pal.
