I'm sure somebody will chime in with a lot more to say soon. But the long story short, if the wattage claim sounds too good to be true, it is. And for most CB communications, a stock radio will do just fine. I have several stock radios, modified CB radios, and modified export radios, and honestly their capabilities are not very different. It's the antenna that makes most of the difference. Since you're on the road a lot, you would need a good AM radio. Cobra 25 or Cobra 29. If you want an export radio, I recommend the General Lee because it is particularly durable. While Galaxies are great radios, some people insist that they are not as durable and that may be an issue for you on the road a lot (but probably not).
TL;DR any radio in good condition will be fine for you and most anyone. Just make sure that your antenna system (size, SWR/ground) is excellent. That makes all the difference.bored silly and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
Buyin a radio is like buyin a sport bike..Start small to learn the basics and grow from there...Dont wanna be spending 200-300-400 on a big radio and ruin it with the lack of know how...Go basic and learn then roll out the chk book for big radios and toys..
A cobra(new/refurbished about $100) a wilson 2000 or if you rather fire stick type is 20-70 a coax is another 20ish..Oh and a mount for it another 10-20..bored silly and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
I second BT the general lee is a pretty good start make sure swr is fine get your self quality mic/ant/coax.
But before read & read & read again the info's is out there & available, and don't fall for the wattage claims that most shop will try to sell you.
Good luck!bored silly and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
Just get a used cobra like a 29 and have it tuned right, don't bother with the "super trucker" radios out there, you will get better bang for the buck with an older radio.

I'm with the "buy a used Cobra 29 crowd". Preferably from somebody than has never let anyone inside of it. Buy the longest fiberglass antenna you can get by with. Have the SWR set/checked and you will have a good radio set up with very little expense. If you are in a Cascadia, you better read here - http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...eads/cascadia-antenna-solutions.249124/page-3
