Looks like that spacer housing is held on with 4 (maybe 6) countersunk allen head bolts. Thanks everyone!

those must be some long flywheel bolts behind that clutch.

I did mine on my 3408 a while back and it will be just the same as your 3406. There are long bolts which go through the Brakesaver to the flywheel housing. You have to attach a plate to the rotating part of the Brakesaver or you will ruin the seals. Check out the first few pics here of when I did mine

Also a pic of the plate you bolt to the rotating part. IMG_2118.JPG

Bit behind, bet ya got it out by now. Yes, you remove the bolts holding the trans on and the retarder has a few allen head countersunk bolts holding it onto the flywheel housing, no worries, guide studs are handy to a degree none the less. Then, look close to see if the retarder seal(s) are leaking, if so, nows the time to re-seal it, especially if you are doing a resto and it has been sitting, perhaps a rear crank seal also? Take care.

Is that plate only needed when you actually remove the brakesaver from the engine?

Next year's project. Engine is coming out so I can steam clean and paint the inside of the frame rails. Good time to reseal a few leaks and repaint it.

Yes, because there is nothing to hold the rotating part off the seals. I borrowed it off CAT, also the lifting tool. Once the long through bolts are removed, there are a few short bolts holding the Brakesaver to the flywheel housing.

Ok that makes sense. I will definitely do that when I open up the engine in the spring.
