I had trouble finding this information before I went ahead, so I thought I would post here and hopefully google or whatever search engine you use leads you here.
So a little background I have autism spectrum disorder, formerly had Asperger's syndrome but it "no longer exists". I also take cymbalta 30mg nightly to help stabilize my mood.
Before going for my exam I had my prespribing DR right that my medication was safe to use well driving and that I was following theraphy, the D.O.T ecmanier didn't like how the letter didn't say what my condition was but he said it was no big deal, it's really just the medication that counts.
After that he said he never head of ASD, wasn't sure if he was trying to bait another diagnosis out of me or not but I sure as hell wasn't going to lie on a D.O.T physical, so I mentioned It used to be Asperger's and he wrote I had ASD(aka Asperger's) on my card.
All in all I was worried for nothing, seems as long as your're psychiatrist is willing to write a letter it takes any blame off the examiner and put's it on the psychiatrist, meaning the examiner doesn't give a flying crap about it if you pass the other parts.

The examiner no matter what is the one who signs the document and that makes them 100% responsible for their decisions to clear you to drive, no one else can sign that document.

Ok, so I guess it makes them feel more confident in their evaluation of you rather than feeling less calculable.

In my opinion this is one of the primary problems with the current medical examiner system. In your case I don't know if the examiner actually has an MD or not. However there are a huge amount of examiners that are NOT Medical Doctors. How in the name of all that is holy can someone NOT a doctor stand in medical Judgment of A legally trained and licensed Medical Doctor. Back in the middle 90s I left a clinic near my hometown angry at an idiot PA. I am one of those that can't see all those numbers in those circles. I was told he could not give me a card because of this. I told him that was NOT the standard and all I was legally required to be able to do to be medically qualified was to be able to see those 3 colors. He scoffed and said I don't give cards to color blind people. This is the same clinic where a Nurse Practitioner almost killed my mother in 2002. However I have discovered the best ME I have ever seen was Dr Anita Sager at the Hampton Virginia Veterans Medical Center. If I were still driving Dr Sager would be the ONLY ME I would use!

He actually was a MD, which is why it surprised me.
