I got a notice in the mail that the Prime, Inc servers have been hacked and they took driver codes as well as Social Security Numbers. Has anyone else gotten a notice? Apparently they promise to provide credit monitoring through a third party.

Yeah, we received messages over the QC regarding it. Sadly it's a legit notice.

Freeze your credit with the Credit Reporting Bureaus. It MIGHT cost you $10 each, it might not cost anything. Skip LifeLock. A credit freeze prevents new credit lines from being opened, even by you, unless you supply the PIN number the bureau will provide you. DON'T LOSE THE PIN NUMBERS.

LifeLock jus puts a note in your credit file sayin "check ID before issuing credit." Almost no credit grantor pays attention to that. LifeLock is like putting a "Do Not Enter" sign on your front door, but not locking the door. A Credit Freeze is like a deadbolt lock and your PIN is the door key.

No problem. Their web pages are a bit unclear when they charge their small fee to lock or unfreeze. I only paid to lock the files, about $10 for each bureau, and have unfrozen them several times and never been charged a fee. You unfreeze/thaw your credit report just before you apply for credit. You can do it by web page or phone call and your report will be unfrozen/thawed in seconds or an hour. When you unfreeze them you can specify how long to leave them unfrozen. I typically unfreeze them for a short time a few days, and then when I'm informed the credit grantor has what they need I will freeze them the next day.

Like I've said I only paid each one once to lock the files. LifeLock charges you a fee every month just to put a "keep out" sign on your file.

If you forget to unlock the credit files, typically anyone needing access will inform you they could not grant credit because of a freeze. Just unfreeze them and advise them to try again. If you lose your PIN numbers you have to physically mail documents to get new PINs. Keep your PINs in a safe place and DON"T LOSE THEM.

Having your credit locked down also stops inquiries.

I've had to pay $10 to each bureau every time I've wanted mine temporarily unlocked. I think it depends on what state you live in.

Mine has been locked for years. I had to claim actual fraud victim. I think the laws have changed since. With all the hackers as of late.
