When I was a small child my father drove a gas truck locally and he often took me along.
He'd wave at nearly ever vehicle he'd meet.
I'd ask him, do you know that person? He'd say no
I asked him why he waved then
He said, it doesn't cost anything to be friendly.
I've never forgot that
Or the smell of his new truck

I still haven't started but trucking is perfect for me because I can save a small fortune not paying rent for an apartment. Trying to save for a fixer upper house or piece of land and if i worked a regular job where i have to pay rent too i wouldn't be able to buy anything. $800 for an apartment plus the utilities and internet that's over 10 grand saved right into my bank account. I also don't have any major bills so most of my money will be banked. Pretty much just food and cell phone is the only bills ill have on the road.

What's holding you back?

Working and trying to save money to start to get me out there and hold me over until I get the first check . Not easy to save money for me right now because i'm behind. Trucking will literally change my life financially.

Been over the road, living in the truck full time for almost 9 years.
I love being my own boss, for the most part; no one looking over my shoulder, not literally, anyhow.
I can wear pj's all day, most days. (I do mainly long hauls.)
My wife rides along, 9 years. And yes, this is really a big plus! I actually love being with her on the road more than when we were "normal."
I love having a different view from my office window every day.
I love being able to listen to several baseball games a day (in season) on XM.
I love the flexibility of being able to visit grandkids who live east coast & west coast multiple times a year.
I love doing my downtime in various places, a mini vacation to visit ballparks or a cushy casino.
I'm in my 60's, been driving more than 10 years, and I'm still excited to wake up every morning & get behind the wheel.
To the OP, thanks for the great thread! -
Great post. Your comment about being excited to wake up and get behind the wheel every day sums up my own thoughts to a tee. The more challenging the better.OldMuleskinner and Rusty Trawler Thank this.

A man has to know who he is. Not the man he thinks he wants to be. I'm a truck driver. Pull open decks and take pride in the work I do. I haven't always been a truck driver and I may do other things. I will never again not see the value in doing something I like because others don't.
Weeezerd, skellr, Rusty Trawler and 2 others Thank this. -

The pride factor alone is a big part in what makes a driver a good one.Weeezerd Thanks this.
