Hello all!
I'm looking for a piece of advice on the subject. I'm looking at T600 with C15 MBN Cat. It has 1.4 mil. miles, the engine never been opened up... so no overhaul yet. The seller says the ECU was re-programmed at Pittsburgh Power a while ago to 550 HP and it runs around 7 mph at 65 mph. The motor uses no oil at all between 15k miles oil changes and oil samples are good. No blowbys. I would like 6NZ or 3406E motor more, but not too easy to find. My question would be: how risky you think is to buy such a motor with 1.4 mil miles with no overhaul, but well maintained....? Should I consider it at all, or keep looking...? By the way, the truck is not cheap in a first place and I could not afford to overhaul right away.. maybe in another 200k miles.....Any thoughts? Thank you very much for your time.

It could croak any day. That's how you have to look at it. I bet the motor has had work. Hard to believe it hasn't. T600 is a great truck.

an mbn IS a 6nz casterated. a 6nz program and turbo should make a 6nz runnin engine.darelisnx Thanks this.

Like strollinruss said, it's very hard to believe it hasn't had work don't with that many miles. It could blow on your drive home or run another 200k. You say it's not cheap so if it was me, I would run. Depending on your budget you should be able to find a good truck on truckpaper.com for a decent deal with a couple hundred thousand miles on a rebuild. Also I would suggest having at least half of a rebuild budget before buying anything. You just never know what could happen especially if you have someone else drive it.

I thank you all for your inputs... I might keep looking for a good older Pete or KW (2000-2003) truck with overhauled 6NZ.. And prolly will keep in mind to keep extra $10k as a half for an overhaul if needed soon

Don't be afraid of the e-model cats. 6ts,1lw, 2ws or even a 5ek. They all are decent engines.darelisnx Thanks this.

Find you a good shop. $10k is only about a third what you'll need to have CAT do it. Was quoted $26.5k for my c13. Had it inframed at Watrin in Terre Haute for $14k.
And don't forget you'll have bills to pay during that 1 to 2 weeks your truck is down.darelisnx Thanks this. -
All these e-model cats would have VIN# starting with "6ts", "1lw" "2ws" and "5ek", right? By the way, is it a huge difference between inframe and full overhaul? Why would someone do inframe and someone full overhaul? I did and overhaul for my old Detroit S60 and paid around $10k.. I guess it was only an inframe..?

Yes the serial# of said engines start with those digits. In frame is just that, can be done in the truck. A full overhaul or (out of frame) is usually done when the crank or block needs work.darelisnx Thanks this.

Make sure your carefull to pin the seller down on what his "inframe" consists of. Lots of guys throwing that term around and everyone has a different idea of what that means. Or what kind of parts they're using.
