Since I was a kid I had always wanted to drive. I was always that kid in the back of the car on road trips doing the imaginary air horn tug to drivers and a proud thumbs up when they ablidged.

At 19 I walked into a recruiting event in metro Detroit but was turned away because I wasn't old enough to do OTR. The internet wasn't around then where I could read about the job requirements so I was quite disappointed when I found that out. I left there and went straight to the military recruiters. I served my time but wanted to drive instead all through my 6 years of service. But, during that time life happened. I married, had a kid, felt a sense of responsibility to my kid to be home.. so after I separated I earned my Bachelors and became a cop for 5 years. The bureaucracy eventually burned me out and at age 31, in 2008, I finally went and got my CDL. Fast forward 5 years and I decided to earn my Masters degree (2013). I quit driving OTR and, instead, drove local to make school easier (online education) for 2 years. I graduated and strived to do something greater where I could use my degree and experience to, hopefully, better the industry... but at the least someone else's life. 1 year later (most of which as a stay at home dad so I could spend my time job searching) I had sent 130 applications out in 25 different career areas and got only a SINGLE interview... to which I wasn't selected. At this point I had been out of OTR coming on 3 years so I knew my time was about to expire before I had to do a refresher. So, I did some research, called my top company, and they accepted me no problem without retraining and I've been back at it 2.5 months regional/OTR.

Long story short.. driving has always been here for me when I needed something new or when plans didn't work out. And after having experienced what I did while unemployed.. i'm not sure I want to go back to trying to find an office job again. I missed long haul driving dearly every day I was out of it, which told I never should have left, and I think that time off is what humbled me and made me realize it. In some ways I feel this is what I was meant to do with my life since the first time I ever remember seeing my first tractor/trailer and understanding what they did. And that's... basically turning a frown upside down!

Baker Hughes, Halliburton, and Slumberger have jobs that require a CDL. For example, driving cement trucks to rigs and blowing the cement into pots, ready to inject around casing. You have to bring one big rig to the job site, then help unload other trucks as they come to the job site and then do the injection in the well.

I've talked to a number of the techs and right now they are overwhelmed with work. They don't have enough driver/techs. That's why they hire my company to provide drivers on a contract basis just to get enough cement trucks to their jobs.

Well, I guess I could say I was born into it. More then half of my close relatives are truckers with several owning their own small company. One of those relatives being my father who owns 6 trucks. I started driving for him 3 years ago and enjoy it for the most part. It pays very well for the area I live in and since everything we haul is some form of cattle feed, I get to be home every night. Probably going to end up taking over the business someday whether I want to or not.
