So i went otr for a little while then found a local gig making about eight runs a day straight drop and hook mostly with some waiting in between first off I really don't like these quick runs back and forth its more work than driving when your dropping trailers all day and strapping racks we don't get paid for. Second which is my main question we work 5 12hr days sometimes 6 and instead of getting paid time and a half for anything over 40 we just get paid our normal hourly pay now does anybody know if this garbage is legal im fed up working all the #### time with no overtime pay. Every other company I know pays overtime for anything over 40 is trucking different ive ask the upper management and get the run around. Thanks for yalls help

Watford City local gigs probably pay 3x your local wages.
Varies by region.bamalife123 Thanks this. -
Perfectly legal, driving is exempt from min wage and ot rules. Its company by company. Some pay ot at 40, 45, 50, never... i get ot at 8 on the day...
TankerP, bamalife123 and Chewy352 Thank this. -
The best local gigs have low turnover rates so hard to get those jobs. I know how you feel though. I drive for my dad hauling cattle feed to local feed lots. I work 6 days a week and 10-12 hours, sometimes more. I get paid by the load so no ot and there are times I sit for hours waiting to load not making anything but my day longer. Lucky for me though, I can take off any time I want and make an average of $20/hr. Some loads I've made $30 plus and other I've made less then $5/hr. Just keep in mind that you get to be home with your family every night and your really not working hard. I've done a lot of farm work, construction, and worked in oil fields. My hardest day trucking is nowhere near the work of other jobs. Just a lot more responsibility hauling 100k down the road at 70mph. Now if you like over the road and don't mind being gone, you should go back to that. Maybe get your own truck and team drive. Keep that truck rolling all the time and make big $$$

If your just getting paid by the load and you've gotta do all of that dropping/hooking... that sucks. How do you not get paid for the extra work? They just pay you when your rolling?Depends on the company. Some pay OT after 8 or 40. I get it after 8. I know the fuel companies get away with it here by putting one truck in another state thus making it an interstate carrier and they don't have to pay OT. Like others said, the good jobs aren't advertised and have low turnover rates. Took me 5 years to find a fantastic company. Keep at it.

Legal, but the sign of a COMPLETE crap company. Your in the deep south which typically means less Union jobs and bad pay. Look into Union jobs and LTLs which typically pay OT after 8hrs/day and 40hrs/wk. Cheap (sometimes free) benefits and good pay. ABF should be down there, I don't think YRC is but maybe one of the other versions of them. Being in AL and wanting to be local I'd seriously only target the Union companies, I'm sure there's some good paying ones that may not be but not being from that area I got no clue. FedEx pays good and their an open shop. I'm sure some people will chime in with some more area specific options for you. Check indeed and zip recruiter for openings, they typically have better companies listing their vs places like craigslist.

I would say that's a sign of a crap company. There are definitely bad companies out there but almost every small company around my area pays per load. Usually between 22-25% of the load. some pay even more. That's just how the ag business works out here in wyoming/nebraska. It's a small companies or farm plate trucks most having only a few trucks and the occasional having between 5-10. The faster you get the load down the more you make and the sooner you get to go home. And like I said before, it's not hard work. If you think it is then go work physical labor for a few months and you won't think it's that bad. if you don't like your hourly wage now then keep looking for a new job.

How close are you to Montevelo? Beelman Truck Co. is hiring and they have a good reputation. I've talked to a bunch of their drivers in MO at the lime plant.

Trucking is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) which mandates minimum-wage & overtime pay for most employees. I also am required to work over time & only get straight pay for all of my hours. Any company has the OPTION to pay you overtime pay, but they aren't required to pay it
Union company's do pay overtime per their contracts, often after 8 hours per day, the rest is paid overtime.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Second that. Montevallo drivers had it easy when I was with Beelman. Went down for a week when they were swamped to help out.Chinatown Thanks this.
