looking at a truck with a N14 525/1850 celect motor. One head was cracked so the dealer is replacing all three. He said it was common? What causes that? Overheat? Poor warm ups? Motor was a drop I from cummins and has 400000km, about 230000miles. Should I run away?

I wouldn't necessarily run away, but there is a number of reasons a head can crack, unfortunately one of them being that they can just crack, too much horse power, overheating, wrong torquing procedures, sleeve height issues, warped block, bad casting, injector issues, the list goes on... Some people sometimes replace just the one headsnowman_w900, BUMBACLADWAR and timmytorco Thank this.

As I read through the 87 pages of work orders I was emailed, there was a faulty fan clutch and rad replacement. "Overheating on long pullsl" was the complaint. That may explain it. Dealer wanted to replace all three before he sold the truck for peace of mind.

Id probably "haul a..",unless youre getting a heck of a deal? What year?Cause? Id say the fan clutch slipping and somebody just "putting their foot in it all the time"

I vouch for the N14 Celect... to me its one of the best engines to be on the road, a real powerhouse, if maintained they can very well exceed a million kilometers, proper injection timing setting, they do pretty good on fuel, good jakes and they just sound good

N14 is s great engine however any engine overheated for long periods may be a oil burner now along with other potential issues.. if it's cheap enough I may chance it

Over heat complaint coupled to cracked head? I would pass.

Cracked head. No problem. I paid $225 each for mine last summer. N14 easy to work on.
Overheating on long pulls could be from a bad coolant sending unit not turning the fan on.
The problem may be more complicated. I like the N14.
Put it on a Dyno and find the problem.cumminskid123 Thanks this. -
THe rad and fan hub were replaced 6 months ago. I'm wondering if that's how the head cracked in the first place. The head was found through a fuel bleed back causing hard starting. I told the dealer to get a leak down test and call me with the results before I buy it.
