I don't go there unless it's 2.5$-3$/ mile, and the freight is dead slow in my lanes, and that's on dryvan.

I've loaded three times in the last year backed up to a dock. Overhead crane or side load is 99% of my loads.

    Monday
I picked up a 40,000lbs coil. Seven chains & binders, 4 coil racks, & 2 pieces of dunnage
    Drove 500 miles

    Tuesday
Deliver coil from Monday put all securement away
Pick up pallets of bagged sand (10 straps & 2 tarps)
    Drove 500 miles

    Wednesday
Deliver sand roll up straps and tarps
Pick up 10 slinky coils (12 straps, 4 coil racks 4 pieces of dunnage)
    Drove 670 miles

    Thursday
    Deliver slinky's
Pick up 3 coils that were 15k a piece ( 9 chains and binders, 6 coil racks and 6 pieces of dunnage, plus a tarp

    Friday
Delivers the coils home by 5

I understand you can push paper but not knowing how to maneuver your truck and trailer or how to secure loads on top of booking your loads from the front seat of your truck instead of your desk is a ton of work.

If you got money don't lease on to anyone just to give them money to do work you already know how to do (book loads, rate cons etc) but get a dry van first. Learn the ropes of being a trucker before taking on securing each and every load .

Just one guys opinion who is sitting on his couch on a Friday night tired from this week. Yes, I book all my load me too.

    I have been.

I won't let what makes the rest of my business work because people need to learn some things on their own. I've been involved in one or another business for most of my life and know that there is always difference ways to produce revenue or capture work.

If I started out being a broker, I would have been producing large revenue from day one instead of learning and losing money during that time. I followed others, listened to those who are successful and didn't stand on the idea they were wrong when it worked for them.

Crap there's a few articles about how to capture revenue on deadhead moves when you have a deticated route, these are on different blogs, go start reading them. Whatnthese give are ideas of how to get the truck moving and producing all the time.

If you can't figure out where the freight comes from outside of those load boards, then you will fail quickly.

Too many retired truckers running whats left of their old trucks,.. happily running for $1100 gross a week. The latinos arent any better. Then complain when they run out of money because rates are too low.

I have no empathy for them. They created the mess and then blame brokers for being greedy and low rates. If they would stop taking the mentality of "If I dont take it, someone else will" and hold out for higher rates Florida shippers would have no choice but to pay a respectable rate.

I've made hundreds of cold calls, I approach many shippers directly even though I was brokered to haul for them. Its difficult to get a shipper that will pay a decent rate in Florida. If the shipper only wants to pay $600 on 450 mi and then broker it out through multiple brokers. Guess what,.. another 10 - 20% will get cut and then it gets posted on the load boards. So how can we expect a good rate from brokered freight in Fla if the shipper wasnt paying much to begin with? Thats been my experience trying to find steady consistent dedicated freight in Florida.

Would you agree the cargo securement on flatbeds/stepdecks should require some sort of a formal training or class? To prevent completely fresh entrepreneurs to figure things out on their own. How can a rookie out of CDL school know how to secure a tank on a stepdeck?

I take offense of the overused and worthless word entrepreneur.

Ok I had to say that so I fully agree with what you say, one accident or have a something slip off the deck can be done if you are really clueless and most are who just get their cdl.

    NO.
Why put on another layer of Government rules and regulations.
Who ever is going in to business, in any field or skill, should learn or search knowledge to improve their skill set. This should be common sense.
Know your craft before you sell it as a service.
Next you want everyone be required to work for someone else before they do............!
F-no. Get the government out of the business of running my business and back to protecting my country from invasion and such.

Well said and wholeheartedly agree. Those who would give up freedoms for a false sense of security deserve neither.
