24 y/o school bus driver arrested after 5 killed in rollover

Yes the driver was going to fast, yet I still am holding judgement on the driver until the rest of the info comes in. Another issue is, what if the driver was dealing with a runaway bus with a stuck throttle? Is that driver still the guilty one? We dont have enough info here to make a sound judgement.

 

I'm watching the latest report on this tragedy. It is possible...possible...that he did this on purpose. This is based on several accounts given by kids that rode his bus. Still early, but.....

Time will tell. According to the mom of three of the kids who ride this bus (one of which died yesterday), the driver was prone recently to telling these kids to "shut the eff up". These were elementary school kids. Four girls and a boy died. One was a kindergartner, one a first grader, the other three were all a few grades beyond that.

 

Yes he is still at fault. You drop into neutral if the throttle sticks, the hell with the motor. Then use the brakes or even pull the knob to stop.

 

I got off the road after 2 years OTR to finish up the one semester I had left on my college degree, and drove a school bus as a 2nd job during that semester. Worked out great...drive a morning route, go to my classes, drive an afternoon route, and then go to my other job. I was 23 or 24 at the time. It's a great job for a college kid in that regard, in that it works with a typical schedule.

News on the radio is saying parents have been complaining about this driver...hungover, dangerous speeds, etc...everything you DON'T want in a driver of ANY size vehicle, but especially not a school bus. If this proves true and the district and/or bus company did nothing, they'll be in a world of hurt.

 

I had my own trash route with a similar truck as below....( "VERY" similar ~ auuuughh..) when I was 24, here in Rural, Ohio. I sold the truck and the route as a package and bought my now house / semi-barn / all in one. Great investment for a young man, right?
The maturity of 24-year-olds , "their mileage may vary" ~ but.... could I have hauled elementary-aged children (lots of 'em) at 24? Perhaps. Sanely? Perhaps/ or not...
Personally, I think having a CDL at 24 is do-able, granted back then I didn't have to.... depending on the cargo / freight. The most precious HV loads should be left to more seasoned pro's, IMHO.
Granted, there always exceptions to the rule; my now-wife was teaching Kindergarten at 24. Only she and God knows how. Patience for children and partying don't mix, obviously.
I wouldn't have driven a bus at "34" with young children. It takes a certain breed, for sure. My daughter's bus driver is a 55 y/o man that used to drive for Maverick, and my son's bus driver's husband currently hauls for Sapa / Knight. I'm fortunate of their age and understanding of the industry, for sure.

Now with the stories of the driver with attitude issues, the company may be liable for not getting this cretin fired.

 

A terrible tragedy... made all the worse if the reports of the driver's behaviour are true and nothing was done about it (if it was known).

 

I got my Class 1 when I was 20; I am now nearly 54, but there is no way I could have then, nor would now, drive a school bus. My wife did... bless her. I rode with her a few times and there is no way I could do it. Ironically, we were talking about this just recently (she has moved on to driving bus for a large city transit department... bless her) and she was saying the young kids and the old kids were good, but the middle-school kids were hell.

I've ridden with her a few times on the city bus too... nope, no way I could do that either.
