Our company policy, despite pot being legal now in California, is the same as it was before. Zero tolerance.
Our insurance company told us, even before pot was legal, that the same standards will apply as before.
Personally I don't see anything wrong with burning a couple on the weekends but when you consider the fact that your whole career can go up in smoke (and yeah the pun was intended) it doesn't seem to be worth the risk.
A couple of our drivers asked me specifically what would happen if they tested dirty for pot. "Same thing as before, you're gone" was the reply. They didn't like the news but that's the way it is for now.
Our random drug testing sometimes isn't very random at all. I hope they realize that. If we had to let a couple of really good drivers go for something they did when they were home and off duty I'd be madder than hell, But they would still be fired.

Don't count on it ever being legal for truckers. I know a ton of small companies that don't test pre employment but their insurance company can request a drug test any time. That is how my dads company is. Like many have said, trucking is federally regulated. Each state has its own laws but those are only more strict then federal.

When you buy a gun from a through a dealer you have to certify that you are not user of or addicted to any controlled substance.

    Federal law.

I suppose that using a controlled substance might induce a violent firearm tendency. Of course a drug test would clear up any questions prior to purchase.

This is my first post and all but I must chime in on this. It's not a matter of whether or not it's legal in any states or for the entire country for that matter. Nerve meds, muscle relaxers, and opiates are all completely legal with a prescription but your still recommended to not operate heavy equipment. You need to take into consideration that you hold the lives of every motorist and pedestrian that you get near in your hands when your operating a cmv or any vehicle for that matter.... Long story short if you're even considering the use of any type of mind altering substance you should look at other career choices.

The bottom line is even if a accident isn't your fault, it still is if you are positive on a post accident UA. Depending on the severity. CDL goodbye, possible jail time and your conscious.

It sounds like trumps appointees want to apply federal law to those states with legal recreational marijuana and make it illegal in those states. There will be some big changes in this area in 2017.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but there is a difference between state and federal laws. FYI.:D
