Saluda right? It's also the steepest ordinary railroad grade in the US, they had extremely strict rules to run that one.

Where I'm thinking of is further north, along the NC/TN line about where I-26 crosses.

Did they not close that? Should be a tunnel up there that was active back in the 60's when we traveled down that way as a child. Maybe further north towards VA, I'll have to look.

The roads down to the copper mines in Arizona have a wide range of grades, some easy at 5%, others up to 19%.

The road up to the gold mines is a bit different, thats about 20 to 25% from the get go. last load up took about 3 hours. speed limit is 17 MPH.

That's in my hood and I've done it a few times. It's an easy one to bypass though.

Back in the day, I'd run MA 57 west out of Springfield to RT 8 south to skip the fustercluck on 84. 12% grade with a stop sign at the bottom. Good times.

They aren't marked, but some of the roads in mid Ohio (Amish country) are very steep albeit very short. The thought of cresting a hill and finding myself on top of a buggy scares the poop out of me.

    *And it's Richfield, not Richland.

Steepest I've drove with a truck was 11% from Rossland to Trail, BC. Super b-train grossing about 136,500 lbs. Went down it in third gear at 11 kph, it was a 7 km run so it took 35 mins to get down that one hill.
Then from there over to Creston via the Salmo Creston summit.
All told it took me three hours to go 52 miles.

Steepest thing i've ever been down is maybe black mountain in NC. I forget what % it is but i saw a few guys burn their brakes going down it. Even saw a guy take the emergency ramp. It's pretty easy though just use the jake brake and don't ride them like an idiot.
