Your physical may get by at school, when I went to school one guy already had his and he didnt need to retake it.

You WILL be drug tested again.

Yous SC permit is completely and totally useless outside of SC for the purpose of haveing it upgraded to the actual license. You will be in school in AR you will be tested by an AR state tester, his results are only valid in AR, and will not transfer back to SC. So takeing a SC permit to any other state in hopes of haveing it upgraded is a waste of money. You will have to get a permit from the state you are being tested in.

The company you hire on will want their doc to give you one. The school wants you to pass if you have 1 foot, 1 eye and 1 hand. They want your money. The co wants to make sure they are not investing in a workmans comp case....

    Hello everyone,

I got a question about the physical. A friend of mine went to Swift for his training (I have to intentions on going there.) and He said something about weight lifting which is fine. I lift items all day, its my job. Only thing is I messed up both of my knees in a car crash which in turns doesn't allow me to bend my knees and hold my body weight so I doubt I would be able to do that test. I was wondering if this would be a problem on the physical? Also does a female or male give the dot inspection for a guy? (I'm a male)

I don't think every company does that weight lifting test. Not sure though.

Gosh I hate to be negative here, but I just have to. Trucking is hard on the knees. Let me say it again. TRUCKING IS HARD ON THE KNEES.

You have to be able to climb in and out of the cab, and you have to be able to get in and out of the trailer. I don't see how you are going to be able to do this if your knees can't support your body weight.

What I do see happening here, if you somehow should get through the physical, and you are able to pull yourself up into the cab enough to get through training, is I see you completely blowing out one or both knees in a very short period of time. (I know, that was a long, convoluted sentence. I just don't know how else to say it.)

You also have to be able to get down on the ground to put on tire chains, and possibly do a little side of the road repairs. You have to be able to climb up and clean your windshield, side windows and mirrors.

Many people think trucking is a "sit on your a55" job, and to a certain extent it is. But there is much more to it than that. There is a lot more physical work to trucking than most people realize.

Should you be required to load/unload your own trailer, you must be able to physically move enough to do it. This may require bending and squatting, as well as lifting and pulling. This type of thing will happen to you, even if you normally just do "drop and hooks" or normally just do truck load. There is still the time when you will just have to help. And if you should get into a less than load trucking job, you will be constantly loading and unloading, not to mention climbing into the trailer numerous times a day.

I'm afraid this is just not the job for you. I'm sorry.

    Cybergal and Baack Thank this.

You can apply for a medical exemption, but refer to the above post. My knees stiffen up after driving 5 or 5 hours straight. Trailer height is 48" off the ground, and you WILL need to climb up into it...

swift WILL require you to take a STRESS test. You will have to pick up various weights, from various heights(25-50lbs/floor to shoulder) then take those weights down a 50' hallway. I know, I did it. if you don't think you can, don't go.

No, My knees can support my weight and I can get down on the ground I just can't squat down then expect to pick up my body weight and 80 pounds of weights. It ain't going to happen besides driver4015 I'm not going to swift. Most time if I need to get something i bend my knees slightly and bend my back. My current job I pick up 80-125ibs items from the ground using that and then throw them up on vehicles with little to no problem so weight lifting isn't the issue.

Besides I know all about trucking my father is a trucker for 40 years and I used to go with him and do all the things he did after my accident and I didn't see much of a problem. I don't think because I can't squat down like a catcher doesn't automatically put me out of the career.
