I'm from California. I work in Illinois.
I would like to go back (at least to a Western state) but the pay stinks - add to that the higher taxes and higher housing costs and ...guess I'm finally married to the mid West after a long and tepid courtship.
Well, It's up to me of course, I could do something a little more responsible than my easy dedicated reefer gig and maybe make about the same but I just want to understand why wages are so low in an area of the country that costs so much to live in.
I thought it might have to do with the dense population but East coast has dense population and equal or better pay than mid West. Anyone else like me; an economic ex-patriot/ tax refugee from California?
Can anyone explain this? Or better yet, throw me some leads for Western jobs that pay as good?
Thanks for your input truckers.

California is Non-English speaker central then add our porous southern border and drivers with snow aversion and you get poor rates. I love the Midwest I get better runs, less scales, higher speed limits and cheese.
Besides who would want any part of this?
When they could have this.

Someone just said that it's because California has so many illegals. Don't you need proof of citizenship to get hired?
I don't think the Mexicans are to blame, Texas has just as many and there are lots of good jobs in Texas.
Again, any leads for good paying companies running Western region would be very appreciated.bottomdumpin and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
There's no decent mileage pay on the west coast. Not that I'm aware of anyways. I can't figure that one out either. Much higher housing costs with lower wages. Go figure.

Move to Las Vegas; no personal income taxes in Nevada and housing is reasonable.
There's some good linehaul jobs in Las Vegas; Old Dominion, Estes Express, Reddaway, Mountain Valley Express.

I don't know about taxes. But i know freight rates suck on the west more then the east. Plus, the east is flatter which equates to better fuel mileage.
Companies have better profit to pay the drivers better on the east.
Eastern drivers make better wages and mortgages are half the cost of western mortgages. Unless your in florida or new york. Which compare to california.rabbiporkchop Thanks this.
