im very green to the radio scene. Been driving for almost 10 years and never ran a CB. Well, its Christmas time and the wife needs ideas. I can get an almost new 29 for 50 bucks. The Mack I'm in now has an antenna but my research shows that's it's junk. I saw on a website that pairing a Wilson 1000 mag mount with a Cobra 29 is a solid combo. I'm not looking for a super trucker radio... I need something that would be clear for about a mile or two. I occasionally pass some fellas in my company and just wanna chat while in passing or if I'm stopped in a rest area and wanna hear banter.
Cobra 29 and Wilson antenna?

Why a mag mount? Just spend the extra 30$ for a mirror mount and new coax. How much of your Mack is actually flat metal you can even mount to?
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
i ran a stock cobra 29 classic with a wilson 2k, mirror mounted, and it worked great. i was receiving 15 miles at times and able to transmit 3 or so on any given night.
edit: on a 14 day cab mack pinnacle.Bout Z, Air Cooled, Diesel Dave and 1 other person Thank this. -
That Wilson is a halfway decent antenna. There's absolutely no reason you shouldn't be able to accomplish your objectives with that antenna that you already have

Sorry dude. I'm so new to the radio scene I have no idea. I've got the antenna on the mirror (about 3 feet) and everything in the cab is set up to plug in. I've heard from other drivers that the antenna has problems abs read online that Mack set it up with grounding issues.

I bought the upgraded 29 LXBT on Amazon. It has the normal 29 stuff plus weather radio and can connect thru bluetooth to the driver's smart phone, giving him hands free capability. Pretty cool. Even shows who is calling on the screen.
Hooked it up to dual firestick antennas mounted on the mirrors.
So take a look, the used radio may not be the best choice. Although at $50 that is a really good price.

what antenna does he have he never actually said. just told everybody he read that it's junk. I dunno ???

Unless the cab is made of steel, a mag mount antenna will not work. It is most likely madr of fiberglass or aluminum.
Get the 29, plug into the factory setup, and see how it goes. Results may not be optimal, but should work ok.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
I agree with this for the most part. I am running a stock 29 with a Wilson T2000 as well. Its probably the best antenna I have run to date. Prior to this T2K, I could hear & talk about 2 miles. With this set up, I am hearing & talking probably 5 or 6 miles at about 2 SWR's. I am by no means disputing the gentleman I quoted above but, I am not aware that I have ever been able to hear or talk 15 miles. Again, for me, in my situation (& all situations are different) 5 or 6 miles is normal. For me, that's fine. I have time to get a heads up on accidents, back-ups etc.DRAGON64 and rabbiporkchop Thank this.
