Indeed it does. It minimizes the need for slowing down at the focal point.

Unfortunately, the shortsightedness of too many car drivers prevents it from working as well as it could.

Yeah, theres always a few "im more important" types, but sitting up so high gives you perspective. Ive watched the old school way, and its anger and threats of accidents ect.. then i watch a proper zipper from a ways back in line, 8 out 10 are gapping out for the car on their side to get in with out having to brake

Yep. Then there are the two 62 mph trucks in a hurry to #### it up.

Zipper merge is great when put into practice. I work local in Southern California, so I'm in traffic jams every day. Without fail four or five four wheelers will try to get in front of me at a merge point. The "I don't want to be behind a truck *cry*" mentality can be mildly irritating at times.

You can make the zipper work regardless of what the cars do. You need the truck to cooperate, not the cars.

All trucks run stay in the lane you're in when you come to the backup. Fill both lane evenly. Then all trucks stretch out that following distance to 100 ft. Right before you get to the block, the traffic will automatically align to merge. You dont even have to plan it.

You're thinking that the cars will be able to get through the gaps with the big following distances. They wont.

I enjoy causing impatient #######es to miss exits or get stuck in turn lanes. it's funny ####. I'm one to "ride" the car in front at traffic and lights. I paid attention and waited my turn. those impatient pricks and people with their phones shoved up their ### deserve to sit at a merge point for the whole day.

I had a idiot, when i merged to take a left exit, decided to pass on left side of me. Problem was his land ended for construction. So rather than slow down idiot plows into the orange barriers. I didnt feel sorry one bit. Instant karma ya know.

I had a dumb-### that got the horn and the finger just back on Sunday afternoon on I-90 in MA. Mr genius with his stick figure family sticker on his Honda minivan with those ugly blue CT license plates on the way back from his cape cod weekend getaway:mad:. He merges onto the freeway and decides to cut me off on the right side as his lane disappears. What a loser.

A year ago or so I was on i496 in Lansing MI. Noticed brake lights ahead and everyone getting in the right lane. Noticed the sign 'right lane closed ahead' as I caught up to the traffic. It was strange, in the half mile back up only 2 4 wheelers ran past in the left lane to get ahead. I've never seen everyone get into the right lane so early in one of those situations though I think it's because most were getting off at one of the next couple exits.

Anyway, get around the bend after crawling for 10 minutes or so and it becomes obvious the right lane is not closed ahead, they just forget to remove the signs.
