i am a student driver for swift and in my 3rd week, I was making deliveries to different companies in the city of Chicago at night. There was an extremely tight turn (the tightest I have ever been in) that I turned into because that is the same way my mentor went in a couple days before. He even told me to watch him make the turn as it was extremely tight. Anyways, I wasn't able to successfully complete the turn as I was too busy watching my trailer to see if it would clear and the passenger side of the bumper hit a guard rail. The bumper wasn't totaled, it's just that the side of the bumper had a minor crack on the passenger side. The mentor said that he would have to report it as an accident. The guard rail had been hit numerous times as there was plenty of damage to it from other trucks making that turn. It's almost like they don't want trucks going that way. There is a car shop right where the guard rail is, so maybe they put it there?

So my question is, will this go on my report and is it an accident? He reported it to swift, took some pics of the bumper and the guard rail. He explained to them that the guard rail has been hit by numerous drivers.

It won't go on your MVR, but it will go as a Preventable Accident/Incidents with Swift and it may be on your DAC Report.

If any future Employer calls Swift asking about any Accidents/Incidents, Swift will inform them of that particular one.

It will also affect your Risk Analysis with Swift too.

It's reportable. It'll be on your DAC. But chances are good you'll be forgiven this one.

A whole new Freightliner bumper is just short of $2,000. Ridiculous? Yes. Blow a tire. It's cheaper.

I have a question, why didn't you G.O.A.L. ? Isn't that posted all over in and out of the truck ? Why wasn't your mentor spotting you? This is why I can't stand the new generation of trucking. It's all about you, No one helps each other anymore like in the old days. And the so called mentors don't know squat. They run and snitch on a very small incident. Sheesh......

He demonstrated it a couple of days earlier according to the OP. Maybe it'll buff out.

He was probably in the bunk. Why does Swift call them "mentors"? They seem far from that.

So he is neither mentor or trainer but a team member.
    OK. We all got it.
