I finnally found a truck that had what I needed/wanted in good enough shape in my price range. But it was manufactured without front brakes !! I know this is common on older trucks but is it leagl. I mean will it pass dot inspection? I've already talked with my truck mechanic who does dot inspections. He says as long as it was manufactured without front brakes it's perfectly fine .
If it's not fine can you add brakes to the front without reworking the whole truck?
Thanks guys
God Bless
Oh it's 1980 White road boss 2 btw

I know older motorcycles are grandfathered without front brakes

Your truck mechanic is correct. If it came from the factory without brakes, you should be good, otherwise they will write you up. My Kenworth that is parked is a 1979 and
has front brakes. Back in the days, I drove a 73 and 75 and they both did NOT have front brakes. If I was you, I would call the dealer and give them the VIN and find out if or if not came with front brakes from the factory that year.Last edited: Dec 16, 2016
FarmerTom311, OLDSKOOLERnWV, clausland and 2 others Thank this. -
Why would you want an older truck with no front brakes?
-
Bassicly because I'm poor and it probably won't get a 1000 miles a year put on it . that's farming tho....1000s of dollars worth of equipment that gets used 3 weeks a yearOLDSKOOLERnWV, clausland and truckerman75103 Thank this.

Unless you get some young buck doing your inspection who doesn't understand that there was a time that trucks had no front brakes, you'll be fine. It happened to a guy I know. All he did was talk to the shop supervisor and the matter was taken care of at once (ie the mechanic was informed that since the truck was built without front brakes, it wasn't a requirement). Truck was passed and never questioned about it again.
My 1980 KW has no front brakes but I will be installing them since it makes sense to have braking power up front. Its a relatively easy install since I'll be replacing the entire steer axle.FarmerTom311 and Dye Guardian Thank this. -
Yes legal for regular hauling.
Heck some of the older trks even had a front brake limiting valve. Yep you could shut of the air to the steer axle brakes on wet or icy roads. Loved itjohndeere4020, OLDSKOOLERnWV, truckerman75103 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Because old iron is awesome lolGrubby, wore out, clausland and 1 other person Thank this.

I remember some also had a switch on the dash to disable the front brakes for adverse road conditions. I think it was labelled for wet roads.

That also. Trucks and for that matter tractors, cars , and everything else used to have class and style. Now it's all cheap plastic Chinese junk .slickWillie1980 Thanks this.
