Apparently those are just levers in place of splitter and range valves. Just makes the single shifter more complicated.

Now here's some real multi-stick shifting:

You guys are pretty sharp. @johndeere4020 and I were trying to spot the SWH's.

Yes your right, my mistake. Did just that, checked the manual.

If your referring to the 15 speed (or any LL) your wrong. The aux box on that works just like a 3 speed brownie. 3 x 5 = 15

On the 13/18 not the 15/LLs as their as not splitter it is deep(er) reduction.

    OK

Correct in the case of the 13 and 18, not the 15 and LLs because it is not really a splitter, it is another range.

Yes and same as the 15 or LLs

I am not sure what your trying to say but I believe your mistaken.

The 13 and the 18 have the same number of cogs as the 15. Just to set a baseline on our understanding. The big difference is the 13 and 18 divide up the use of those cogs in range and splitter, where 15(LLs) is all range. So if you think of a 15 as a 5 with a 3 speed brownie you got it. 3 x 5 = 15.

It is just 3 gear ratios overlap on that deep reduction. But, they still call it a 15.

The 13/18 have a range set of cogs and a splitter set in addition to direct couplings for each. So even though similar, they function as 2 different 2 speed sub transmissions. So the maximum number of gears is 5 x 2 x 2 = 20. (You do have 20 ratios in the 18 but two are repeated so its called an 18. 13 doesn't have lower split so [ 18-5 = 13])

The difference is the 18 allows the splitter section to work in low range.

You have to shift the stick before you flip the switch, if that makes any sense. At least that's how the two 13 speeds were I've driven.

These were both older 13 speeds, judging by YouTube videos I don't think the newer ones have that problem.

Twin sticks? Because every 13 I've driven if you get out of whack you can easily find where you should be without stopping. The same for the old two sticks I've driven, I always heard don't get both in neutral at the same time or you would have to stop and start over, I could always find a gear to get the main in and then the aux box.

No, I'm talking about the old regular 13 speeds with air shift. Seems some of them didn't like flipping the red air switch before you shifted the stick. I'm not sure they are all like this but the two I've driven were that way.

Yeah I'm not sure what me going on there but I've never had to stop to start over just flip the button back and rev her up or let her fall.

About the time that I got my cdl I bought a 64 b75 with a triplex. My dad had to drive it home for me. I would take it out on the county roads to learn how to drive it.

Yeah, I don't think we're disagreeing, just not communicating! :D

    @Toomanybikes, here's a blast from the past:

For all you other guys who are curious, the service manuals on Eaton's site are all downloadable as pdfs. You can learn a lot just by noting which models are covered by what manual. Below is the list from the 15 speed service manual, you can see all the LL's that are internally identical to the 15 in all but gear ratios and shift rails (the RTX have the normal shift pattern.)

    Fuller Heavy-Duty Transmissions TRSM1500 EN-US April 2013 RT-8908LL RTO-11707LL RTO-11708LL RTOF-11707LL RTOF-11708LL RTOF-14708LL RTX-11708LL RTX-14708LL RTXF-11708LL RTXF-14708LL RTO-11707DLL RTO-11709MLL RTO-11908LL RTO-11909ALL RTO-11909MLL RTO-13707DLL RTO-13707MLL RTO-14709MLL RTO-14908LL RTO-14909ALL RTO-14909MLL RTO-16908LL RTO-16909ALL RTOF-11709MLL RTOF-11908LL RTOF-11909ALL RTOF-11909MLL RTOF-13707DLL RTOF-13707MLL RTOF-14709MLL RTOF-14908LL RTOF-14909ALL RTOF-14909MLL RTOF-16908LL RTOF-16909ALL RTX-11715 RTX-14715 RTXF-11715 RTXF-14715 RTXF-15715

As far as when to split... Eaton has long recommended that the splitter and range be preselected before moving the lever. If the tranny doesn't shift properly doing it that way, you likely have issues in the air system.
