    METTAWA, Ill. (WLS) --
One person died and one person was injured early Friday morning in a rollover crash on the Tri-State Tollway at milepost 20, Illinois State Police said.

Investigators said a 2007 semi tractor-trailer was heading west on I-94 when a wheel came off the truck around 5:50 a.m. between Everett Road and Route 60 in north suburban Mettawa.

The driver lost control, struck a 2007 Chevrolet, hit the concrete median and overturned, state police said. The driver was thrown from the cab and died at the scene. The victim's identity has not yet been released.

When the semi stuck the barrier, it also knocked down a light pole, which fell onto a 2016 Subaru heading east, police said.

The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center. That driver's injuries were not life-threatening.

The truck and emergency crews blocked lanes on both sides of the tollway for hours. All lanes reopened around 12:45 p.m. Friday.

    The crash remains under investigation.

    That's no good.

I don't know the facts, but all i can think is: WEAR A ####ING SEAT BELT. They are meant, specifically, to save you from getting tossed - because that's what puts you to a quick end.

I remember going through Student Training at Stevens Transport back in 2000 and they showed a couple of pictures of what can happen when you are tossed out of a truck in a Roll Over Accident.

The first picture was of a Ocean Container laying on the grassy median with a intact man's arm underneath it sticking out.

The second picture was of the same grassy spot once they lifted the Container off of his arm.

Let's just say, if you know what ground beef looks like, that's what the rest of the man's body looked like.

I always wear my seatbelt, the life you save, will be your own.

I was wondering the same thing. Steer tire maybe but that's unusual unless one was just changed or worked on in some fashion. I guess the rim could just fail too. Sorry for his family's loss.

This video freaked me out the other day

    That's it right there, man.
You're either thrown under the rig and ground to a smear on the concrete, or you're thrown into traffic and used as a rumble strip for passing / approaching traffic.

It's easier for a Doc to fix a busted clavicle and to impact your intestines back into your ###-hole than it is to make you un-flat after your own trailer railroaded you.

Those images they show you... some scoff and think 'dramatics!'.... That's real. It's gruesome. I think not wearing a belt is a suicide wish. You don't care about you - am I to suspect that you care about me? No. Love for the world starts within thyself. Charity starts at home.

The irony is: I used to not wear a belt - years. Didn't care. For me, for you, for that mom and her little kids. I was a selfish prick. Now, tho I might look at my own life at times and say 'this thing is garbage'... there's no one coming down with me. No one will suffer my fall. Only my own.

    /philosophical rambling

If I had been running the toll, I would have been nearby when this happened, I got to Wheeling about 6. Went in on 41 to 21, those unmanned tolls and no ezpass are painful.

This was on the news radio as the most covered incident all morning.

I had wheel bearings and kingpins replaced once. 9 months later I had a steer wheel come off. After investigation it turned out to be counterfeit bearings.

Just by the grace of God, there was no personal injury or property damage to anything other than my truck. You take a loaded truck at highway speed, then in a split second the right front steer is gone and it's sitting on the spindle coming to an abrupt stop. I'm a good driver, but a lot of things went in my favor in those few seconds.

Keep up with good maintenance, and good records, it helps when fingers are being pointed at you.

I used to think all of this type of incidence was a result of poor maintenance, that is not always true. Prayers to those involved and their families.

I tend to over analyze stuff like this but do you think it better to have thumbs inside the steering wheel or outside. Nobody keeps a death grip on the wheel at all times and if a tire blows do you think it would break/sprain your thumb making it harder to regain control. Or would it help to have thumbs in to help you catch the wheel before it gets out of control?

My opinion, with today's power steering you loose control by over reacting. If you don't panic, that pump and gear is more than capable of keeping a reasonable amount of control with that one good tire. It's not not like the days of the manual steering gears. Back then the steering wheel would break your wrist.

That's what my experience was, and it was a quick violent separation.

But like I said, a lot of things went in my favor in those few seconds.

    4wayflashers and Lepton1 Thank this.
