i'd like to add/modify a few things here:
1) As shonuff pointed out, you could potentially make 90-100K as a dock/cdl combo driver OR extraboard driver at UPSF----it's all about getting hours. This, of course is at top rate AND it depends on the terminal---both if there are any dock/cdl or extraboard positions at that terminal AND how busy things are setup at that terminal----will you get lots of hours?
2) UPSF is 100% free health ins AND dental. Not sure about the spouse and kids though?
3) We do have a few daytime p+d guys making OVER 100K but they are putting in ALOT of hours.
i'll be making more than i've ever have per year in trucking this year (over 60K). And i'm only at 2nd year rate.Sho Nuff Thanks this. -
P.S.
About the 401K
UPSF does have one, but no company contribution----i think the company contributes to the teamster pension plan or something. Doesn't concern me right now.Sho Nuff Thanks this. -

I can imagine it's 24/7. I see grocery haulers sharing the road with me every night. -
But man oh man, summertime ,, when you pull in the yard around 7-8am on your "Friday" (which is actually a Tuesday or something stupid like that), been on the clock 5 hours with 8+ on paper, it's 75 deg and rising, crystal blue sky,, your two wheeler in the parking lot glistening in the sun,, .....well, nothing screams 'Miller time' like that does!rodknocker and speedyk Thank this. -

I'm linehaul for ODFL.
Without looking at my pay stubs, I know I figure about $400 a month for benefits for my family. It's actually a bit lower than that, but I round up for budgeting purposes. That's fully loaded with maxing out our family coverage for health care, including dental and vision. Bennies are so so. United Healthcare. For single drivers, it's very cheap - not quite free, but cheap.
401k is good. They do a fixed matching of 30% on the dollar, up to 6% for each weekly pay period. You can defer up to %60, and any amount over the 6% is matched by OD for the discretionary bonus that happens at the end of the fiscal year. The discretionary match has historically been about 40% - so it's a nice lump of money, depending how much you contribute over the 6%. I know drivers that have collected over $10,000 a year in "free money" that was matched by OD - these drivers are also contributing a lot towards their 401k each paycheck. The ODFL stock has done quite well over the past 15 or so years, usually splitting about every 5 years.
Our top rate now is .6378 cpm. I don't know what P&D drivers make. Based on our cpm and compensation for drop / hooks / fueling, even for an easy 8 hour run (440 mile meet and turn), you can still gross about $68k a year. We have linehaul drivers at my barn that are over that 100k mark. Average at our barn is $80k. Equipment is well maintained, at least every 30 days there's a schedule maintenance on tractors, trailers and jiffs.
Opportunities will vary based on location and specific terminal. Pay doesn't change, except having a 1 cent differential for all northeastern miles. Depending on where you move to, you could possible have daylight linehaul, especially if you get into a break bulk terminal. I saw daylight extraboard schedules only about a year into the company, at my terminal. I'm out of a larger break bulk, so I have lots of runs to choose from, and I've moved up rather quickly in seniority since I was hired at the beginning of a hiring spree and some drivers have retired. I can now choose to go daylight on the extraboard, or have a few daylight schedules, and there's always more options for night schedules. What I'm trying to tell you is that you might be able to grab that holy grail of LTL and get yourself a daylight linehaul schedule within a few years, depending on where you work out of. Most terminals don't have daylight schedules for linehaul, but if you have some freedom in relocating, you might be able to put yourself in a position to have daylight linehaul.misterG, speedyk and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
