Figured this might be of interest for the cabover fans out there, or at least might bring back some good old memories for some people. Hopefully I posted it in the right place.

I started out as an bedbuggin' owner operator about 3 years ago with a newer International Prostar, after my company forced us to adapt to Elogs early, I decided to sell and go the old school route instead. Sold my old tractor, took my profits, and hunted down the right GMC Astro.

I have a sweet spot for two stroke GMC products. I'm currently 80% done re-converting my 48 foot 1959 PD4104 (Greyhound Bus), and have always had my eye out for the right Astro or Titan Cabover. This month I finally found her. I just got it back from an 11 hour bobtail barely in time for Christmas. It popped up on the Des Moines Craigslist and I ran out there as soon as I could. She's a one owner, WELL taken care of truck from a grain bin company. Came with complete maintenance history including all receipts, miles, and hours documented, all the way back to the original build sheets. It makes for a folder an inch thick. Currently mid 300's on miles, roughly 20k on it's rebuild. Full Reyco spring suspension, delete front brakes, A/C, Power steering, slide 5th wheel, and PDL. The only things I plan to add: KingCruse Cruse control, Jake brake kit, ear plugs, mouth guard, and driving helmet! Since it's an unmolested one owner truck I'm trying to keep it as original as possible. I'll be putting my company logos on magnetic sheets so I can pull them off easily for car/truck shows etc. but enough about that, I spent all day removing a thick layer of grain dust from inside, so enjoy some pictures!

    And...
    If anyone has a Jake set for a DD 8v71 or 8v92 with covers let me know, I'll be in the market for them. 20161225_115521.jpg interior2.jpg 20161226_125936.jpg 20161226_163402.jpg 20161226_125913.jpg 20161225_115521.jpg interior2.jpg 20161226_125936.jpg 20161226_163402.jpg 20161226_125913.jpg

Let that old iron ride my friend. It'll outlast any new truck rolling off the line right now hands down

Hi B_H, 1st, welcome aboard. Cool truck, I never was a cabover fan, drove several in my career, and I never was a "ring-ding" Detroit fan either. However, I do think the Astro was one of the nicest cabovers out there. UPS used them for years. If you are dealing with light loads all the time ( or empty trailers) an old Detroit is ok, might want to check local laws before going there:p, but if you are going to pull any heavy loads, an old Detroit won't cut it. I'd go with a newer Detroit, if money allows. Also, a Reyco is one step up from "rubber pad" suspension( no springs) I drove an IH Transtar cabover with a Reyco and it was torture. I suggest an air ride( take your pick, they're all good) as the 1st priority and you'd have one sweet truck. I thought the Astro had the nicest interior and gauges. Great find, good luck. Oh, one more thing, get a nice shock isolating seat. Trust me on that one.

Love that dash! On seats, peterbiltparts.com is selling some nice ones for around $400, about a $300 discount from list. Just saw the ad yesterday.

Don't forget a better seat belt harness system, so you don't fall out the side window. That was the one thing about Astros that always felt weird to me.

Screaming Detroit is a sound from the past. Been in cabovers my entire 40 year career, friend of mine says my brain is mush because of it. Don't believe it.
Now where the hell did I leave my keys...

Good choice...I'd imagine those trucks are getting "thin on the ground" now..

    Nice save.
