I'm in foodservice so it's different but our relay positions are the first to go off the seniority board but they are filled by old timers that don't want to push a two wheeler anymore. It pays less but they like it a lot better.

I totally understand why it is that way in foodservice. Food delivery is 10X harder than LTL P&D work.

Trip pay can have advantages and disadvantages.
The good....
For the most part, you always wind up finishing earlier than what the trip pays for. But then there's the question, what about if you're stuck in traffic or delayed, and go beyond what the trip pays for? Yes it can happen, but usually that's the exception, not the rule. You can finish the run as quickly or as slowly as you want. You don't have to worry about company accusing you of stealing time, or have them follow you around (which has happened to me in the past). If you choose to lollygag, that's on you. Also, sometimes you don't have to clock in or clock out as well, all depends on company policy. Some trip pay just pays you the same rate of whatever the trip pays for, no matter how many additional runs you do. Others, like when I worked at IBC, they combined the total hours for all trips rates. From my experience, union trip rates pay better than non union, but that's just my experience.
The bad.....
Yes if you go over the hours of what you're trip pay pays for, technically you're not being paid, but like I mentioned, this is the exception, not the norm, unless you live in NYC, Philly, or other heavily congested areas. But usually they factor in delays, such as adding and additional 30 minutes to your run, or just pay you additional for delay time.RookieJ1987 Thanks this. -
I wanted to update yall!! As of right now, I have put in with all of those good choices yall have provided. But only these 3 are intrested in me NEMF, NEW PENN, And Estes due to a BS Misdemeanor I got hit with a few years ago.

New Penn used to be the premier Northeast LTL carrier, it's a shame what YRC did to them. May be still worth a look see, but the other 2 options aren't bad either, in my opinion anyway. Big factor would be insurance costs, Estes probably runs high in that category. Remember New Penn and NEMF are Union carriers (the former Teamsters and the latter some machinists union), so be prepared to live in the "Seniority Rules" environment. Some folks can't deal with that and want steady work immediately (can't blame them). Estes would probably offer more consistency, at least at first. Union carriers will allow you more freedom to pick your work/run/schedule as you gain seniority (this is a generality and doesn't apply in ALL cases).
