Another split break question

    I know there are several threads on this subject but I still need a simple, clear answer to get it through to my feeble brain. Just two questions. Here is the scenario....
    2400, come off of a 10 hour break. Go to sleeper berth at 1000, having logged 9 hours driving. Leaving 4 hours on the 14 and 2 on the 11.
    1800, come off of sleeper berth, having logged 8 hours in sleeper berth.
    2200, go to sleeper berth, having logged 4 hours on duty and 2 hours driving. Leaving 0 hours on both the 14 and 11.
    Now my 2 questions.
    1 How many hours will be available at 2400, after a 2 hour break. A new 14 and 11? Another 4 and 2? Nothing?
    2 How may hours will be available after another 8 hour sleeper berth break? Any difference?

    After 2-9:59 hr break you will get back 9 driving and 10 on-duty. If you run those hrs then do another 8 in sleeper, you will get back 2 driving 4 on-duty. The only way to get back a fresh 11/14 is to do a full 10 hr break.

    You always get back what you put into your work day between 0001 and 23:59 Subject to the maximum allowed 60 or 70 hours in a certian number of days. And further subject to daily limits such as 11 hours for driving.

    There should be what is called a recap column and that is what will be telling you what amount of hours you will have on the 8th day for those of you running a 70 hour rule or the 7th day for those of you running a 60 hour rule.

    Try to do a full 10 hour break every time. That way you can be ASSURED of a full 11/14. Besides, you are tired from your work and can use a full 10 hour break without stressing over a split time waiting for your 2 hour alarm clock to go off knowing it will cost you again down the road.

    Ive said all I dare say here. I tried to keep it simple. Very basic. You are fixing to get many responses right quick here in this thread and don't let yourself get confused. Don't overthink your logs. It's all there telling you what or how much or how far you can go tomorrow after midnight. (OR your last 10 hour offduty status pending your 60 or 70 hour limit etc.)

    There is always someone going to jump in here talking about a special dispatcher authroization to break the 11/14 rule. IGNORE that. Just so we can clear the air and keep it simple. In my 30 plus years I have never once used that so called dispatcher exception. I did however have ONE dispatcher who yelled at me about that and I yelled back at her saying one word. Bull---- I got fired ont he spot after she lost her temper. But It's my firing and no shame in that.

    I know a lot of guys (solo, long haul) who run split sleeper as a standard practice, each and every day. Theoretically, it can save you a half hour [break] every day (time getting from Point A to Point B) if implemented correctly.

    I like to learn from you where the savings is possible in time, implying you can be 30 more minutes down the road in a workday midnight to midnight.

    The 30 minute break can be encapsulated inside the 2 hour break.

    One way, you need 10 + .5 (DOT break)
    The other way, you need 8 + 2 and if the 2 is in the right place, it eliminates the need for a .5 DOT break.

    This is assuming you're a "runner" and try and run maximum possible hours every day.

    Got it. I had to think a bit. This new stuff gets to me sometimes. I wish for the good old days gone by. Papers and erasers and a HHG mileage chart, Not the actual odo miles thankfully.

    I don't care for the split sleeper mode except where it may be a necessity to make appointment times work and/or having to deal with an unexpected delay, and it works to my preferred option for the near term.

    I'm not a big fan of "long midday naps"

    Ok, I think I have it now.
    After an 8 and 2 split, You pick up whatever hours you used prior to the first break. That's the answer I was looking for. I knew how many would be available after the first break, basically pausing the 14. It was after the second break that had me muddled.
    I don't have any problem working with a recap, been doing it for a long time, but I've rarely used the split break option, and when I did, it was only using the first break and using a full 10 rather than the second, short, break.
    If I'm not mistaken, by rule, it doesn't matter whether one uses the 8 or the 2 first, only that the 8 all be logged in sleeper with the 2 being either sleeper and / or off duty.
