The part I didn't hear made clear is that after you complete the second break of the split sleeper, you get your 11/14 back, *but* it starts at the end of your first break.
So in your original example, you drive until 1000, and take 8 until 1800. You will get back recap hours as others have said.
Now you drive until 2200, and take your 2.
At the end of the 2 at midnight, it resets the beginning of a new day to 1800 (the end of the first part of the split), so your 14 hour clock will be down by 6 hours, and your 11 hour clock down by 2 hours, leaving you with 8 left for the day, 9 driving hours left.
So basically, your second break is coming out of your day, unless you do the 2 hours first (since the 8 pauses the 14 countdown)
And if you want to avoid the 30 minute break, do the 2 hour break first, drive at least 3 hours (so you have less than 8 hours left to go, and take the 8 hours break, and when you end the 8 hour break, you will have all your drive and on duty time left, minus what you used for the 3 hours of driving between breaks.
So just remember to calculate your hours from the end of the first break, and the rest is just math!farmboy73 and Panhandle flash Thank this. -
The best way to do it is to download an app. And punch in your duty changes. You don't need to fill in the locations. Just duty changes.
Unless you're on your A game. You could screw yourself and get in to trouble with an inspection. And end up being OOS.Ke6gwf Thanks this. -
Just think of it as 'you get back whatever you didn't use after your last break'.

Couple mistakes here:
1. You didn't show the 30 minute "mandy" in your first drive session of 9 hours, which is the first violation.
2. You state you were ON DUTY for 4 hours then drove 2 hours....you expired your 14 before starting to drive.
Now my questions to you: Why did you go to ON DUTY for 4 hours before driving the 2?
How can you be ON DUTY for 4 and DRIVE for 2 starting at 1800 and stopping at 2200? That is 6 hours you claim, but only show 4 on the log? OOPS!Last edited: Jan 5, 2017

Couple of answers. I didn't mention the 30 minute break as it wasn't pertinent to the question. Logging 9 hours driving and 10 hours on duty leaves time for a 30 minute kindergarten break. No, It wasn't on duty for four hours before driving two, it was on duty for four hours and driving for two of those hours. As for why, again,not pertinent to the question. The situation was given as simplistic as possible to avoid confusion. Lastly, I did NOT claim six hours and log four. 1800 to 2200 IS 4 hours. 2 hours driving, 2 hours on duty not driving.Ke6gwf Thanks this.

You are not understanding what he was conveying.
He actually did a very good job of formatting the question so we knew both what his driving clock and 14 hour clock were.
So 4 hours on duty (4 hours off the 14 clock) , 2 hours of which he was driving (off the 11 clock), was pretty clear to me.
If you had looked at it as a math problem instead of finding fault, it would have made sense... Lol -
Here is what you stated:
This is not the same as what you now alter the words to:
The first set of words equal 6 hours, your change equals 4 hours.
No matter which group of words you wish to use, the answer to your question: "What hours available at 2400" would be ZERO...you failed your split sleeper provision by taking those 2 hours OFF DUTY, unless you extend that to OFF DUTY to 10 hours total time with any combination of Line 1 and Line 2. Or, if those two hours were done in the sleeper and continuing to the 8 hours in the sleeper.
Just for the sake of argument...did you drive the 2 hours before going to OFF DUTY, or the other way around? Be careful, it's a trick question.
Now to continue the "argument" in this thread...I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what you folks think "RECAP HOURS" actually consist of. Here's a clue, recap hours has nothing to do with the hours used/available in the split sleeper provision, except to the extent of hours available within your 70 hours in 8 days.

Finding fault? Not at all, I was simply pointing out a couple mistakes that would/could get some unwanted attention with our "buds" in those pesky scale sheds! -
First of all, while he could have worded it slightly better, it is clear he was only out of sleeper status for 4 hours 1800-2200, so then you do the math to see he was breaking down the 14 and 11 hour impacts, not saying it was consecutive.
We can agree he could have changed a word to make it so even you can understand it, but we now all know what he meant. Let's put that one to rest.
Secondly, the split sleeper provision requires 8 hours minimum contiguous in the sleeper, plus 2 hours off duty or sleeper or combination. So he is good there.
I am not sure what you are saying about being in violation over off duty or something.
Thirdly, I think what was referred to as Recap, was the hours you get back on the 14 after 8 in the sleeper, ending up back with the 4 and 2 available.
I know recap usually refers to the hours you get back from 8 days before, but it also is sometimes used for the hours you recapTURE after 8 in the sleeper.otherhalftw Thanks this.
