Is running the Northeast profitable on flat? I know that's a open ended question, but I am thinking of doing it to keep the wheels turning in winter. I am an owner operator, and have a dump trailer that I use for landscape supplies during the season. What I was thinking of doing was adding a flat and running hard up here. I last did flat in 2005, and haven't done any tarping. Used corner protectors, straps, and chain hauling palletized product and some rock. I have a contact to get loads out of MA, and then I was going to pull load board to get something back. This would be in between my dump trailer work. Does this sound viable, or is it just turning wheels on cheap, untarped loads? Thanks for your advice.

Mixed bag overall. Lotta cheap work. Not a lot in winter time for flats.

    KO1927 and tbdieseltrucking Thank this.

That's what I figured. A lot of no tarp on boards, but mostly cheap freight if you can find a posted rate. By March, there is a lot coming out of ME and NH down my way. Thanks for your thoughts.

Let me put it this way, I'm looking to add a dump trailer to my operation to supplement the slow flatbed work.

Hauling Salt is looking better than flatbed right now. Think about that for a bit.

Haven't pulled a load from a load board in 3 years (and never have with my own truck) haven't been able to agree on a rate or made the schedule work with any that I've called on.

At the moment, it's all about keeping my best customers happy, weathering the winter, and being ready for things to bust loose and get busy once spring starts.

    tbdieseltrucking Thanks this.

And I have a dump trailer as well. Good customers on that. Parked it in September, did fuel, and went back independent again. I like the idea on salt, heard the horrors of 21 days to pay and cheap rates. Let me know.
