We are a week or two away from finally getting our truck and trailer from the factories and I'd like to take time to hear some of y'alls input on driver efficiency and even company efficiency( I don't run the show so that's not really my place). I'll be on 7 axles. I'd say I'm fairly quick on the uptake of things. I've got almost 9 years flatbed experience if you count the 4 years military experience, some of that being heavy equipment for artillery units. A couple years oilfield and I've been OTR since 2014 and I've had maybe 20 to 25 over sized loads. But of course this is a different ball game. what I'd like to know is:
1) what are some of the things that slowed you down most during your first year? I know the pace is different
2) what are some of the things that took you the longest to get the hang of or remember?
3) what habits did you carry from general open deck freight that you needed to drop?
(This one is very important to me)
4) how many loads should I be aiming to run in a week realistically?
Anything else is appreciated as well.
Thoughts on efficiency

Ok Red...not trying to be a buster, okay?
Here's the habit they bring with them that they nee to lose....that "GOTTA GO! GOTTA GO! GOTTA GO!" mentality.
Aim for 1 load a week, expertly delivered, homework done, etc. if you have to tarp, plan on the tarp job taking a day. If you have to load after noon, bet on not moving that day.
Do not rush, do not take any shortcuts, take even more time to pre trip and post trip. Everything slows down.

Thanks. Red is a good hand. Being efficient like the machines (Skoot, Nate and JD) comes with time. When starting out, I'd rather be slow and perfect.scottlav46, wore out, MJ1657 and 8 others Thank this.

Thanks six. Note taken. The run run run mentality is something I've been sayin I need to relax on so hearing it again confirms it. The owner spent ALOT of quarters to get this all in motion. I'd hate to disappoint but I guess f'in up is worse then being on the slow side a while

Don't think, "slow"...think "perfectionist."
When you get your truck, weigh her full of fuel and gear. That's a whole lot of truck and trailer. Will be much more difficult to maneuver. Therefore, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. No missing turns. No getting lost in residential neighborhoods.
Be sure to post pics.FerrissWheel, wore out, PeteyFixAll and 6 others Thank this. -
Will do I been waiting to post in the big load section for over a year lol once I get something worthy I'll be sure to show it off

Check your hgt. Just don't guess it.
I believe you are a smart person. Use your head and common sense
Have a question, raise your hand and ask. Please don't be shy, it could hurt in the long runMJ1657, Heavy Hammer, Dye Guardian and 7 others Thank this. -
i ordered the height stick and had it sent up to trail king a few days ago. Every time I go under a bridge I look for battle scars. I'm surprised how many have been hit to be honest. Also I've been looking at scrapes going into truck stops. I'm sure I'll do that atleast once but I'm pretty paranoid in general so hopefully that plays into my hand in this sector.
Speaking of scrapes....with permits for rgn trailers....do they "try" to route you around rail road tracks that have enough grade to hang you up? I've never seen it on a flatbed permit obviously but I see how they go as far as tell you what lane to ride at certain locations on the route.MJ1657 Thanks this. -
Ever see, when reading a permit, something about there being no guarantees you will fit on the route and how you can't hold the state liable when you don't fit? Guess what that means?FerrissWheel, Ruthless, Dye Guardian and 6 others Thank this.
