Anyone have any experience driving a cement mixer?

Do they work in the winter time? There are two companies locally where Im at and one has 'guaranteed pay' , some many hours for time off, if there is no work, but they start out at a lower pay grade than the other cement mixing company which starts you at a pay grade below the highest pay grade, then after 6 months, pays you the top pay grade.

I was laid off last year, and started driving a Propane truck/bobtail, local deliveries. I've had my CDL for a few years, and this is the first real day to day driving job I've had. I was told when I was hired there would be overtime required weather permitting. but so far, its been a mild winter. The pay isnt bad, but not alot when compared to the pay scale of a cementer mixer drivers jobs.

One thing mentioned in the interview of the cement mixing job, is that they have odd hours, which kind of concerned me, the guy doing the interview said they could call be at 3 AM to come to the plant.

I've been kind of entertaining the idea of going back to interview again for a cement mixer drivers job, they actually called me about the same time I started driving the propane truck , so I was already committed to doing that, and kind of regret not calling the Concrete company back, to see if the reason they called me was to hire me.

I've been also entertaining the idea of possibly doing both, that is, unless there is hope that the cement mixing job could be a year round job,

just looking for advice from anyone who has drove a cement mixer before, and they opinion of the job.

It's hard work. Lots of people quit after a few weeks. Do you mind climbing up and down the back part of the truck? You have to hook up 50 lbs chutes, sometimes on difficult and uneven terrain. It's no cakewalk.

the pay and overtime is good though right? I'm guessing all the money to be made driving a redi mix truck is during the spring/summer months?

I wouldnt mind, I'm in good shape,

when does a 'redi mix' drivers 'season' start?
