Any alternative to the new gear type starter? I have the 93mt gear reduction starter. It lasted just 2 years bought new ac delco. Deciding which type to put on my 2nd truck.

I had the straight drive on my 14.0 liter.
It went bad and replaced it with a gear reduction.
Moral of the story is you can use either or.

Ive always had better luck with the 39mt gear reduction starters over the 42 straight drive style.
Go with a good brand like Mitsubishi or paccar. Delco or TRP seem not as good.

My buddy had a Mitsubishi gear reduction starter on his detroit go over 8 years before needing replaced. And we do a lot of starting throughout the day.

I guess I should of mentioned, after 20 years in trucking and replacing a few starters over the years, when I heard about the gear reduction starters, I bought one, but like I said it only lasted 2 years and for $325,00 I expected it to last longer. I like the weight, the fast turn over, and pulling less amps. I think I'll try the Mitsubishi one anyone ave a part # for a see 60 Detroit? Is the wiring different?

thanks. the reason I ask is I had to buy 1 when mine went out & had a load on trailer, so I had the wife to go to truckpro & pick 1 up, same as the last 1 I put on brand new delco remy lasted 2 years, but had to get on on that eve, to make delivery, so another delco went on. with my new truck I am replacing batteries & starter, but since I now have time to shop around I found a few online ebay &other places for over $100.00 cheaper, though on 1 seller the info i put in showed the starter would not work on a 12.7 detroit, but that may just be a error on the sight.

Did it sometimes take a couple "button pushes" to get your delco to catch. sometimes when I hit the starter button she will take off and sometimes you have to push it several times. You can hear the click of the solenoid , but no starter action. A friend of mine says his does the same thing. I put a 39mt paccar (don't know the mfg.) on a 3406C and that thing spun the motor like a turbine. My delco, not so much.

    heavyhaulerss and Oxbow Thank this.
