Anyway, The point of schools is just to get you the license. You do not learn to drive in the school. It is all on the job training. Remember your experience as a married couple. You get the license and then learn how to be a couple. Lots of bumps in the road before you finally get the hang of it. You can ask others all the questions you want to but the only thing that makes it work is having problems and figuring out how to overcome them. If he takes his time and is very observant he will make both a good driver and a good husband.

It is also important that he takes the trash out.

B. Well then they will teach how to drive and what to do. C. Really just doing the work is the only way to really get broken in. When I stated at the beer company the transportation manager said to me "It just takes time." Meaning there really is no short cut it just takes time to get a feel for things.

I don't know how much searching on this forum you do, but if you ever look around, we had a discussion about "truck and trailer" combinations which are real popular out in California and the west coast especially Los Angeles area when it comes to fuel haulers and sometimes with trucking and it came up in that thread, things are just not ideal and you have to make it work anyhow.

There aren't to many companies that are going to throw you out "alone" I know you hear stories of big fleets doing that when it comes to bad trainers, however I'm not 100% sure those stories are the norm, yes I'm sure there are bad students and trainers working for the big fleets no doubt, but there are also a lot of decent trainers as well and no company is going to take the liability of sending someone who isn't vetted properly out there fully on there own.

I know where I work now that were not really all that short on help anymore, when ever they hire someone new the training is like 4-6 weeks sometimes and that's for experienced guys and trust me with training especially when you quit jobs or are brand brand new it gets nerve racking at first, but after 4-6 weeks once you really start to get the feel of it you'll be ready to go on your own.

Don't let this worry you; there's plenty of good schools around. Private or community college cdl school should be 160 hrs. minimum. Don't need more than 160 hrs. because most companies hire from those schools.
Here's a few that hire from 160 hr. schools:
Magnum Ltd.
Freymiller
Tyson Foods
Abilene Motor Express
The best deal going right now for trucking company school is Roehl Transport. This is the only company that puts the students on salary from day one. $500.00 weekly while attending their school, then full driver pay at graduation.
He should get all endorsements before graduating from any school. Even refrigerated companies sometimes haul a hazmat load. For example, if no refrigerated loads available, the company may want him to haul a load of spray paint or fingernail polish, which falls under the hazmat category.

The school's purpose is to make you safe enough to ride with an experienced driver. As a general rule Community Colleges/Vo-Techs are better than 3 week CDL schools. However, you will learn far more in the weeks you ride with a trainer at your first company than you will learn in any CDL school.

My rule is focus on a good place to work for you/your family. The schools is more like an afterthought you accomplish to wind up at the company your want to work at. You really need to be comfortable with that first company, so comfortable you see yourself working there for 1 year. Most newbies ignore this advice, flcok to the companies giving 'free training" than try to weasel out of the 1 year contract they signed that gave them "free CDL." DON"T DO THAT. It might work out for you but you are making your life hard and stacking the deck against you. Find a company then find a school. IMO.

hahaha..I take no offense to anyone thus far, il be the first one to say something if I ever do ;0) I grew up ,well I was raised by a bunch of roughnecks, so a few harmless comments are nothin..I dont take everything to the Ars * so to speak. pretty easy going. Im actually thinking of getting my CDL after the research ive done done. I have always been an OTR girl anyways, hence the name.... Thanks for the welcome and God Bless !
