It really does depend on your company. At my last company, they were very good about handling layover/breakdown pay. I was paid one time when the Mack dealer in my hometown couldn't get a part they needed. BTC came up with the $100 a day for the entire week and a half I was at home waiting, no questions asked. I could definitely have made more if I had been working, but I'll take it for doing absolutely nothing except enjoying my family. I'm sure everyone that drives has a story, both good and bad, about layover/breakdown issues, but it all revolves around how your company treats and thinks of its drivers

You only get lay over pay away from your home terminal because the lay over pay is not designed to support you just to provide a hotel room for the night. You have to remember that ALL money coming into a company comes from the truck rolling down the road. If the truck is not rolling no one makes money. So where do you think detention money comes from, the detention tree?

Companies that offer detention pay are taking money out of an account that is deducted from money that the drivers should already be getting paid.

I agree but can you imagine how much Schneider would have to fork out daily to all the drivers that's waiting for loads. If they needed a high volume of drivers then maybe. But they have more then enough drivers to keep the pay as is.

Not really. If that detention time is at a customer, those trucks aren't typically sitting for extended periods for free. If the carrier pays the driver to sit, you can be sure they have a clause in their contracts to collect from the customer.

I agree with the OP. If they don't have work they should tell you and leave you at home. Saying that you need to be ready for work, they should either provide the work or provide the layover pay. This is just another classic way mega's weasel out of their own commitment.

Say the OP lived a couple hours away from the terminal and the truck had to be parked at the terminal. Should he run all the way into the terminal, and live in the truck until some planner got off his but and came up with some load.

;( sad times. If it was once or twice it would not be a big deal.. but more than not.. thats a problem. Can you give your DBL your phone number to just text you when there is a load?
