    The Only Exception would be the Dana 80 High pinion front axle underneath the GMC TopKick and Chevy Kodiak up until 2009.
    unfortunately it had a weak engine but that can always be improved with a Cummins

    Idk about that. By the seat of the pants I think the stock Duramax in the '06 C5500 Topkick I used to drive would keep pace with this '14 F550 Powerstroke I'm in now.

    I've heard some of the Hotshot guys complaining about power in their Top Kicks and kodiaks. personally I would choose a vehicle based on the axles underneath it. It's all about having a solid foundation upon which to build. If I need more power I can always put a different Power Plant under the hood but it's a lot harder to retrofit beefier axle under something it was never designed to have to begin with

    If you Arnt hauling, and want pure longevity, it is likely hard to beat the older dodge 12v, . Or the 24v 5.9l common rail dodge with a 6 speed manual . I saw an 06 3500 quad cab drw for sale very reasonable the other day, would last a casual user a long time with just normal regular maintenance,almost bought it for a backup...but I'm lazy and like autos.

    I'm not brand loyal despite the user name, ive owned sll popular brands,at the end of the day it's just a truck. But that's what I'd look for.

    That duramax was an Isuzu engine tagged as a duramax.

    My current truck is a duramax, previous was a power stroke and before that a cummins. No real problems out of any of them though they were all bought new and traded with low miles. My point is I have no real brand preference. The GM has the nicest cab in my opinion. The cummins seems like the simplest engine with room under the hood. The ford truck itself seems the toughest.

    I would not own a 07/08 or later model of any brand out of warranty with all the emissions junk on them.

    If you are looking older I would get a 5.9 cummins, a 7.3 ford, or really any duramax.

    I know I'm a bit late, but I'll add to it anyways for the future if anyone sees this. I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 with 24 valve 5.9L Cummins engine and an Allison 1000 transmission that I dropped in at about 200,000 miles. The previous transmission didn't have any issues as far as I could tell and all 200,000 miles had been ran from brand new by someone who was a close friend and kept under great maintenance with few issues other than ball joints and the VP44 (fuel injector.)

    I am currently sitting at 870,000 miles on it with very little issues as far as the engine goes pulling 17,000 regularly, which is overloading by the manufacturers standards of a maximum 20,000 gvwr which with a 17,000 gvwr trailer and 8,800gvwr truck is exceeded.

    I replace the oil every 5,000 miles, change the air filter as needed, change fuel filters as recommended and so on, you know, regular maintenance. I have had severe issues which I worked out with the suspension as far as the steering gear box, and ball joints go. I also replaced the inner/out tie rods, tie rod adjusting sleeves, and track bar with an upgraded kit that would usually be used on a 2012. Very little modification. The exhaust is a diamond back 5" w/ muffler w/exhaust break.

    I did need to get a new fuel sensor, added fuel pressure and turbo pressure sensors/guages as well. Had to get the speedo recallibrated after going from 265's to 285's.

    Engine wise though, it's very very solid. If you take care of it like a baby, and make sure you keep the body clean (because if you don't spend extra attention on these, the body will rust fast), you will be fine.

    Of course I have some personal touches such as new headlight housings, HIDs that need to be replaced every few hundred hours oh well, radio is stock, I just use my phone with Pandora and a tape wire, custom Seude insert and Italian leather interior with "Ramborghini" stitched on both front seats a slated grill and after market wheels, still steel, but nice still. Also a nice spray in bed liner, this is of course irrelevant to everything else said, my personal touch is all.

    Bottom line, the truck 24v 5.9l Cummins + Allison 1000 is reliable, as long an idiot didn't own it before you...

    My choice is the Cummins/Ram but use Amsoil in EVERY single fluid. Be a preferred customer, and it's cheaper/same price as Mobil 1 or any other high end fluids. This will take stress off of powertrain/any major moving part that needs lubrication, which will cover 70% of major repairs. Lots of upgrade/accessory possibilities in aftermarket. Your scenario of 20 years/400k miles is common for me with lots of equipment all using Amsoil and minor repairs, and none major to powertrain.
