Sure, if you want another hand in the cookie jar. Also, unlike brokers, they don't have a bond to file on, so if you don't get paid, there's no recourse.

A dispatcher can be a asset especially just starting out. Let's say you do not know anything about the industry ( like myself starting out ) a dispatcher that has years developing relationships can be a valuable asset. Plus doing paperwork starting out ( broker agreements, rate confirmation, etc ) yes they add cost to operating.

A good dispatcher is checking to make sure that the Broker is bonded and has a good credit rating. There's alot of dispatch services out there these days, some are experienced, and some Just claim to be experienced. The key is to find one that's got a lot of experience, And a lot of connections to keep trucks moving. If he or she claims to be experienced make them prove it to you, ask them what their history is, who they've worked with/for, and for how many years. If they say they've been a Owner Operator for years ask them for their MC number and verify what they're saying is true. If they say they drove truck, that doesn't mean they can dispatch. If they say my daddy, or my uncle, or grandpa was a trucker and they use to ride along with them, do yourself a favor and keep looking brother.

Just some tips, never get hooked up with a dispatcher that offers, or insists on handling your billing for you. As a Independent Owner Operator you, and only you should be sending the bills out, and receiving the checks. Your money should never pass through your dispatchers hands. Another tip, don't hire a dispatcher with a bad attitude or a short fuse. You want somebody that will represent your company in a professional way. If you're just starting out my you need somebody that's gonna help you build a good reputation for your business. A good dispatcher is also a negotiator for you. He should always be working to get you the most money possible on the loads he books for you. Your dispatcher should understand things like operating cost, and be able to have a intelligent discussion with you about it.

And last but not least, be careful of what you're signing when you choose a dispatcher.Don't sign anything that says you have to stay with them for any length of time, or continue to pay them if you leave. Just read everything thoroughly.
