I foresee a lot of safety problems in the future of autonomous trucks. I don't trust computers with simple tasks. Operating a CMV? Yikes...

Imagine all the times they will "screw up" and hit someone, or someone screws up and hits them ..... and it simply keeps going on to it's destination, completely clueless. But I realize this scenario may not be unique to autonomous vehicles

It's your fantasy. There might even be robot rabbits playing tic-tac-toe

Ford has announced they intend to build a car with no steering wheel or brake pedal by 2021 for the mass market. Truck can't be far behind.

Ain't my fantasy. My meal ticket is at stake too, ya know.

Would you buy a car with no steering wheel? I have my doubts it would sell well enough to actually change much. I don't think people are ready to give up control even if it means their chance of dying in a crash is statistically half of when they drive themselves...

There's no where near enough real-world and empirical evidence to support such a claim and for that tech sector to throw that out there as "fact" is fraudulent and borders on a criminal act.

I'm not saying that potential will be there at some point. I'm just saying it's waaaaay too early in the game to be making such wild claims based on minuscule "historical data" such as it is.

I agree. I say that because that is what Elon musk owner of tesla states. I don't know what the real numbers are, either way, I think it is important to see that even with a completely computer controlled driving environment we aren't expecting "zero deaths" which to me is impossible... the question lies in what the public at large will determine as an acceptable level where the other side of the scale is their control over driving. Some humans will be better than the computer, others will be worse. Who says who will drive or not drive? I think it will be the consumer ..

But those of us who enjoy driving and do it well will greatly benefit from this technology getting into the "hands" of people who have no skill or desire to drive.

I don't know. Would you fly commercial? Amounts to about the same thing, loss of control wise.

To be more serious, depends on the price of course. But a car where you can sit in the back watching the game, drinking ####tails and boinking the ladies while it drives itself to wherever is certainly going to be a pretty attractive proposition.

Most truck drivers enjoy driving, that's why they became drivers. Most of the general public however, just sees it as a daily grind. Think they'll sell like hotcakes. Especially in areas where traffic sucks.
