Hello all,
I am new to the boards, as well as somewhat new to trucking. I used to work for Werner as a Terminal Asst/ Van Driver a couple years ago. I learned a lot of great information just speaking with those drivers. Over the last few days I have learned much more from these boards. I planning on starting school threw Driver Solutions this month. I am very curious to ask advice conserning money. I know once I am with the company I will be deducted for insurance, tuition, ect. While on the road besides expensive food at truck stops, tolls, and a shower, What other expenses will I run into?
Thanks for your help.

All major fuel chains have a card available you swipe when fueling that credits a free shower for every fuel purchase over 50 gallons . These cards also credit 1 cent per gallon towards purchases in the store including some fast food restaurants . You will be reimbursed for tolls . Some companies will give an advance if tolls are excessive . Be sure you have safety gear required at plants - hard hat , safety glasses , steel toed boots , long sleeved shirt , and long pants . We had a driver banned from a plant and fired because he walked up to the guard shack wearing shorts . I heard a flatbed driver in Rockport , IN on the C.B. trying to find a store to buy a long sleeved shirt because he needed one to get in the gate at A.K. Steel . You didn't mention laundry . The machines at truckstops are a ripoff and don't work well . Try to park near a laundromat if you can . Talk to tax tax preparer and see how to best take advantage of deductions allowed on the road . I heard if magazines or DVDs were purchased on the road the cost could be deducted under entertainment . Buying a laptop to use for finding directions and checking loadboards is another deduction .

Don't forget cell phone/laptop charges. And get a no fee credit card like master or visa. Atm fees can add up. But you're right, food will be the biggest. Limiting truckstop meals, and preparing simple food from the truck will be the biggest savings. Not to mention coffee, soda pop, and water.
And having a professional tax preparer may save you almost as much money as you could by scrimping alone! Good luck.WiseOne and Sunchild25 Thank this. -
Thank you both for your advice. This greatly helps out.

Just kidding (mostly). Anyway, the BEST thing you can do is get your laptop and get setup for auto-withdrawals for bills, etc. OR, just get your bank online to be able to manage finances online and you CANNOT imagine how much this helps! We didn't have that years ago and it was a ROYAL pain if you didn't have a wife at home or something! Take advantage of the new technologies out there to help you!
