Got back to the yard early today. I had a drive tire needed changed out.
Mechanic was gone so I did it myself. Took wheel off the truck, took tire
off rim and put different tire back on wheel. Wheel back on truck, even
torqued lug nuts.
Sounds easy right? 25 years and 75 pounds ago it was easy. Today it took twice
as long and I worked twice as hard. Probably be sore tomorrow.
Went pretty good till the tire iron part. Stuck one in to far, couldn't get
it back out. Couldn't get the other one in.......needless to say I will be letting
the young mechanic do the job in the future.
Not sure if I am proud I managed to do the job or thoroughly disgusted with
myself for being so out of shape. Hope no one saw me.
Not sure whether to feel good or bad

Be proud. I even get a little rambunctious from time to time and tear into stuff. I usually have a bunch of left over bolts though.Bakerman, dunchues, Dominick253 and 7 others Thank this. -
I even watch another guy work on a tire, I get out of breath.

Changing a tire is still on my list of things I haven't done yet.
Probably my first time will be on the side of the road at 15 below with no cell phone reception.OLDSKOOLERnWV, thejackal and passingthru69 Thank this. -
I worked in a truck shop when I was young. I was their tire guy as well as
many other things. Back than it was a fairly easy job. I don't think I have
changed a tire in the 25 years since. Sure seems a lot harder now.austinmike Thanks this. -
When I was a younin' I did agriculture repair...seems like the bigger the tire the easier it was.
-
You did well driver. I haven't changed one since Dayton wheels with lock rings were the norm lol.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
I still bar my own tires on at the shop when I'm home.
But on the road I will change a flat on the road or in a truck stop.
I carry an air jack and an air impact and it takes no time at all really.
It's really quite humerouse to see the crowd of drivers gather to watch me change a flat and telling me they can't believe a driver would do such a thing.
I'm 54 and probably not as fast as I once was but the thought of spending the money overrides my aches and pains.rambler, OLDSKOOLERnWV, Oxbow and 2 others Thank this. -
That makes two of us. Spinning that sucker with the hammer standing beside it and adjusting the nuts until it was as straight as could be.
Last guy that changed a tire for me didn't even take the wheel off the truck... 15 minutes and I was on my way.rambler, passingthru69 and Oxbow Thank this. -
I'm impressed. I worked in garage when I was young and put new tires on cars. Seems like an entirely different animal doing same on trucks.
