I checked out truckpaper.com....they have some good choices to choose from.
I don't know a whole lot about truck mechanics at this point, is there anyway of knowing that I'm not purchasing a piece of junk, like some sort of thorough inspection report?
I noticed some of the trucks have Carfax available, I'm assuming this is a good sign? -

A fleet maintained truck was just maintained enough for it to last until they sell it.
cnsper, swaggerjacker, Toomanybikes and 3 others Thank this. -
There is an Ecm report that a mechanic can pull off the truck...I wouldn't buy a truck without seeing it. Also you could do an oil analysis to see how much metal there is in it from the motor. You need to find a mechanic to inspect the truck for you.
I would have a mechanic go through it, and check the brakes, driveline, engine, transmission, and suspension. Also air compressor, coolant leaks, and battery status. -
If I buy a truck out of state and have to travel quite a ways what would you suggest as far as going about finding a reliable mechanic in the area that I pickup the truck?
Are the mechanics at TA or Loves pretty reliable as far as inspecting a used truck? -
Try Rigdig it's like carfax
Jdm5jdm5 Thanks this. -
I've actually never used Carfax, I know it gives an overview of the history of the vehicle as far as damage and stuff?
Is rigdig more in depth than Carfax?
How reliable are Carfax and rigdig -
This is an ongoing debate, whether to "buy" new and have a warranty and high payments, or BUY used and have either no payments or low payments but have higher expected maintenance costs. A warranty IMHO is a two edged sword. You may get service done for free, but it comes at a cost of down time and lack of choice regarding who does the work.
I like the idea of buying a used truck, cash if you have the savings and go into it with your eyes wide open regarding needing to pay for some major repairs, especially in the first year. You can choose your mechanic, get better service, and know the truck is in good shape after taking care of major issues.
Beyond RigDig or Carfax, always spend money on having a good mechanic look over a truck before making a purchase. Have a dyno test done. It's money well spent.Jdm5jdm5 Thanks this. -
Absolutely true. Especially mega carriers will maintain a truck just enough to keep the wheels turning and kick the can down the road for the next sucker.
If you want to buy a used truck, best to find an owner operator with all the maintenance records that put TLC into his baby.Toomanybikes, Loose Leaf and Jdm5jdm5 Thank this.
