Has to be selling fuel.. Just normal erratic driving would not cause that much of a variance in the MPG of any vehicle. If it were something mechanical, the other drivers would have higher MPG also.
He thinks you are not paying him enough, so he is ripping you off. Time to let him go and replace him. Just tell him his performance is subpar and leave it at that. Don't accuse him of anything unless you have proof.

Tell him to write the mileage down each time he fuels. I would confront him also and be straight up about the mpg.

So being loyal to your drivers means that they can take advantage of you ? Or is it that you know good drivers are to come by and you don't want to let this crooked one of the hook. He must be worth it.

Got an O/O that gets mid 4's mpg. Someone else used the truck for a week and got in the mid 6's. Driver alone can easily use that much more without stealing. If they're stealing fuel you should be able to catch it on the computer.

Selling fuel or he is the unlucky ####### that always gets the truck with the empty tank and then refills it before he parks it like a nice guy, and it makes the next driver look like a fuel mileage king.

Go talk to a cat dealer to see what you can do about having the ecm tracking the engine use, fuel mileage and so on, I think that you could do that on 1999 and newer engines.

If you can do this to two trucks, the one the guy is driving and one another driver is driving to compare them.

I don't even know how you would get clear down to 4....

Are his longs much diffrent from other drivers? IE check his logs to see if he is speeding.
I slip a day cab. The other driver gets 0.5 mpg less than me for the exact same run. Same truck, same trailer, same weight, same pickup and delivery location. The difference is he does 64mph and I do 60.

Also is he using cruise? If he's on the pedel only he is likely slowing down and speeding up continually costing mpg.
