My brakes sound like a train horn, under moderate usage.
If I slowly or gradually stop, brakes are quiet, and stop well.
When I have to make a quicker panic type stop, for a red light, or merging motorist..the brakes make horrible noises...any ideas?
Thanks.
Horrific brake noises

Glazed drums can make sounds, but ck every thing inside drums for missing springs and hardware?
Steel Dragon Thanks this. -
Just had new tires installed, I imagine the techs would have checked the brakes with the wheels removed.
Im new in this truck, so dont know about the service history -
Train horn? Eh....
There should be nothing from your brakes other than the occasional squeal when they are somewhat out of adjustment.
Did you have hot smoking brakes on a fast downhill trip recently? You might have glazed them. You have a shop problem at this point. Go there and solve it before you do anything. Like today. Go find a shop. They are nothing to fool with.
I wonder if the train horn is the low air pressure alarm? That would be a can of worms.SingingWolf Thanks this. -

Fixing to run the Cabbage? What's a good shop before you come off the Cabbage? I forget, anyone know?
Hop under there to see if you have any glazing on your drums. Have your brakes set as normal parking and get a ball peen hammer with you. ding the drums if any. If you hear thud thud thud then your brake pad is holding. If you hear ding ding ding with the brakes set, that particular pad set is out of adjustment and is not holding.
Further Glazing usually presents as a series of cracks spidering side to side on your inside drum surfacing. Have a look.BoxCarKidd and Steel Dragon Thank this. -
Tire shop guys don't check anything but the tires they're putting on... Lot of mechanic shops only check what they are told to check also.OLDSKOOLERnWV, mitrucker, Steel Dragon and 1 other person Thank this. -
